Hi, I am currently considering taking a job with GE selling physician practice management software and EMR . At Plan, compinsation is 150 K but my buddy who had this territory last year made over 300 k He loves the company and wants to bring me on. I wanted to get an unbiased view of this opportunity. This seems like a great field to be in right now with the federal governmet and insurance companys pressuring physican groups to go paperless. anyone out there in this feild and how does this stack up against say device jobs at Medtronic, Zimmer etc.

You're right in seeing that EMR/Healthcare IT/practice management is a strong growth sector in medical sales right now...and it should continue to be for the next 5 - 10 years. GE Healthcare is also a strong player across the board for healthcare. That said, they probably do not have the best in class offering for healthcare IT. However, they are GE and that name goes a very long way toward getting you in the door and giving you a chance to win. The GE "meatball" gives you a lot of credibility. I would say, take the job. BTW, not a GE employee, I'm actually a recruiter in medical imaging and Healthcare IT...and GE is not a client of mine. Just giving you the info to let you know the perspective here.

I call on a lot of primary physicians as well as others and I see more and more going paperless. I agree GE name goes very far. I would take the offer to get experience and it seems like it might be a nice blend of b2b and medical. So you wouldn't be talking specifically about pt care and everything the office may have heard before. Additionally the training at GE may set you up for bigger roles in the future and its a great resume builder.

Sorry for the generic info, but at least its an opinion

Another opinion- this job seems pretty high up the sales ladder so it may take a while to get great feedback on cafe pharma

GE, Take the job and never leave. The name alone sells product.

That is the attitude in a salesperson that GE wants... Cocky and clueless.

Good luck with the second sale.

What part of the country do you focus on? I am in Detroit (suburbs) and would be coming with a 10+ yr technology background (5 in sales, 5+ in service and support). Could you pass along some contact information so that I could send you a copy of my resume? Any help you could provide would be greatly appreciated!

Thanks in advance.

GE has the churn & burn motto. Good stepping stone. However, it is just as messed up internally as other healthcare co's, if not more.
Be prepared to work 15 hours a day through the week and 4 to 5 hours a day on the weekends. This division does have a strong upside if you get a big deal to hit.

Are you sure you're talking about GE Medical? Churn & burn doesn't best describe their medical division. I don't know much about their EMR system but their imaging has an excellent reputation for their long term relationships. Once an account is sold on GE, very few switch.

Oh, have fun with their psychological evaluations. I hear they're loads of fun.

What's the best way to go about getting into GE (any will do, but imaging would be my preference). My background is technology sales, not healthcare. Any good recruiters, contact info, etc...?

Thanks in advance for any help you could provide!

I am interested if the OP Took the position and any suggestions for interviewing with GE. Also, what other EMR companies did you consider?

As a former employee, if you enjoy long hours, endless T-Cons, countless passwords, SSO log-ins, 50 emails by noon, 3 months of training and a thing called sales "micromanage" workbench....you will enjoy this company....

Great gig for a stepping stone...and yes..you can make $$....however...WAY too many other good company's that pay well out there w/half the headaches...that is why turnover is such a problem at GE...and always will be

what companies are "better" than GE??

What companies do you "move on to"?

Former rep here

You have to find out for yourself if the General is a good fit for you. Many other good, fun and high paying companys are out there, you just have to find them!

My humble opinion, life is too short to work in that culture. Live to work or work to live?

Does anyone know how many reps GE has?

Anonymous

GE usually has 1 or 2 reps per state.

As a former rep, GE is easily one of the worst places to work in regards to micro-management and turnover. 6AM to Midnight work days are the norm.

Regarding the above poster questioning "churn & burn". The Imaging & Datex Ohmeda divisions tend to have longer tenure. All of the others ave about 9 months tenure for reps.

6am to midnight is right. We had a real sweet specialist who thought 10pm conference calls were a good idea. If you have a idiot at your current company, send him GE's way.

Concur with all the above. I have never seen an organization with more T-cons, pre-meetings for meetings, human resources at every turn, arrogance, and micromanagement personified. Wow.........what an eye opening experience........glad to be gone. Very close to brainwashing.
