Find the No. of Sales Reps in the US?

I'm doing some research & want to know on average the number of sales reps in the US. Can someone point me in the right direction to find this information. Number of sales reps per company would also be useful especially in the top 20 pharma companies?

anywho, you'd need to go to every company's website and email someone.

then ask yourself this: "If I owned a pharmaceutical company with $18 billion in revenues (which, by the way, has grown 3-fold in the last 5 years), how many sales representatives might I need? If I owned a plastics manufacturing company, how many sales reps might I need?"

why would this number be (so) important? are you researching chemical companies' employees, too? or the number of sales reps for Makita drills or Microsoft? if not, why not?
