View Full Version : Fooling yourselves about your future.

Maybe it is because I am a long time employee and I have seen a lot of great people get cut loose over the last few years but what is with all of these silly threads? Women reps, who is hot ect. You people are fooling yourselves about your future. I know that a lot of you are too young and naive to realize this but rather than wasting your time over things like this you all better be planning your next career move. Like it or not but there are major changes in the way pharm is sold and already in certain parts of the country management knows that they do not need that many reps.

When the dems take over Washington we are all going to see positions cut like never before. I will be first to tell you. Two or three years from now 1/2 of you reading this will be gone and with in 5 years there are going to be so many restrictions on pharma marketing that there will be very few reps.

In the UK. Every drug rep call is registered with the gov and you are allowed to see a doctor once a year. We are getting closer to that every year ourselves. I am just saying hang on to your money and start networking because the ride on the golden goose is about over.

Please! I wish old farts like you would just retire, quit or dry up. GSK is doing great, pharma is general is great and I will be one happy GSK rep when I retire in 22 years. This is a great job so do not knock it!

No you are the one fooling themselves. GSK needed to trim some of the dead wood and it sounds like you might be part of the dead wood. GSK is not really that bad a company and those of us who are successful with have long careers that last for many more years. I do not think for one minute that you know what you are talking about!

I agree with the original post. You people are ignorant if you don't see some of this coming. It has NOTHING to do with deadwood or old people's thinking. It seems like many of you have your ego and pride talking. It would be in your best interest to look at the reality of the situation. I personally will be lobbying in Washington to have the reps follow the UK approach. Seriously, there needs to be medical people talking about new drugs.....never understood the cheerleader & pretty boy approach without any type of license of restrictions. The gravy wagon will END!! You are fooling yourself into believing the old approach will survive the times. What are your backgrounds...the backgrounds of Pharma reps? I have heard so many speak so proudly about their money and the Avandia, Paxil scams....you were part of it. Tell me ....you just didn't know about the drug.....I know, I know you read off scripts and this is the real problem. All of you need MEDICAL Brains or the ability to really communicate the information needed to consumers. It is a crime.

I can tell you that in Minnesota Warren Hatch and the dems have taken a strong interest in this. It is called MN Law and ALL money doctors get from pharma is to be registered with the state of MN as is all lunch money. There has been talk about demanding that drug reps register as a lobby interest but thank goodness the interest in have reps get licenses has eased off. GSK allows no food at doctor dinner programs, lunches or even pens for doctors in Minn. More and more clinic are banning samples in Minn let alone lunches. Take away lunches and samples and you never see these doctors again. This is going to be a trend that grows nation wide as clinic managers see how much time doctors "waste" on drug reps.

We have a future at GSK and Big Pharma. Good to know I did not think that was a option.

Of course we have a great future in pharma with GSK!

I just saw this add in the upper left hand corner of this page:

glaxosmithkline careers
Looking for a Management Position?
Over $100,000/yr
Ladders.com

Now if GSK was having so many problems why would they be running ads with jobs like this?

Power to Minnesota!! Take notice Pharma Reps....it is going to happen. It is long over-due and also the Big Pharma's will need to get their act together for the consumer will not tolerate this unethical and immoral activity. Find a new profession for it is coming.

There were plenty of Pharma reps around in the 1970's when I started. There were no lunches or dinner programs back then and we did fine. I can see a state like Minnesota banning samples in the future and that could kill the Pharma business there. Fortunately senior citizens love samples and they would go whining to their elected officials if they tried to take them away in most states. Minnesota is different, socialism is the name of the game there.

You are right Minnesota is different and socialism is the name of the game here. Many of the major clinic systems have banned samples now and we have not heard a peep from the senior citizens. As far a lunches go I became a rep in 1979 and we did not lunches at all until the mid to late 80s.
I can tell you that every clinic that banned reps and lunches no longer see reps at all.

I have seen this coming over the last 5-10 years and after the democrats get back in the White House there are going to be changes in 2009 that make what happened in late 2007 seem like a minor bump in the road. Big Pharma is going to continue to be a political target and tighter regulations and Canadian type price controls are going to cost a lot of us our jobs.

I started in 1980. Also did not do lunches until mid late 80's. No need for them. I do not blame reps for the problems of our industry. I blame upper management. We have been telling the companies for years that they were hiring to many people and doing the wrong things. Unfortunately, it is the reps that will suffer from these bad decisions. Management will make millions with options and obscene salaries. When we went from detail reps to talking mouthpieces for marketing, the downward respect and problems started. To bad, this used to be an industry where you could make a decent living with some security for the long haul.

You have been a rep since the 70's and you have over 30 years in and you are not retired?! Either you are from a part of the country were there is little or not real control of the doctor's writing habits by HMOs or you are from a part of the country were there a few corporate owned clinics where the doctors can still see you. In Southern California there are Kaiser clinics that I have not been in years and we live or die by HMO formulary status.

If this is a true post I guarantee you are not from my part of California

Nope, it will never happen. The status quo will continue no matter what. Even if GSK doesn't manage to bring any new products to market, they will still keep all the reps they currently have, but I'm too tired to tell you why.

It sounds like we should fire 90% of the reps in socal and other parts of the country where reps have little access. That money could be used to reduce the price to these MCO's and make the company even more money.

Seriously why do we keep dead weight like you. How are you making the company any money.

Honestly, I cannot understand why some reps are happy to stay reps FOREVER. Don't they have any desire to advance? Isn't that a fundamental quality of humans? Remarkably, some territories are dominated by representatives that have been there since the early 1990's--they don't want to advance and they certainly don't want anybody newer than them to advance. It's sad--not that the elders are content to sustain their positioins and atrophy, but that they are eager to go out of their way to impede the advancement of aspiring newbies. If you are one of those golden oldies, step aside....

Hey dip shit, there are 9000 reps in the US, do expect all 9000 to promote. Must suck to be you - moron.
