Retiring is a good suggestion, but not necessarily the best way to go for some people. It depends on your personal situation.
Since this tread is about age discrimination, does anyone have any information on the EEOC and how to file a claim with them? Also, if one does file a claim, what is the process.

Serious replies only!

This is the way I view the "age discrimination" issue. It is a problem that could or could not be the actual reason for being passed over. Regardless, fighting it or focusing on it as a problem or issue doesn't benefit anyone, especially yourself.

I am referencing myself because I too thought and still do at sometimes think it is happening. But my attitude is effected negatively, it makes me look bad for complaining about it and won't change reality. So I now try to look at myself instead of blaming others and see what I can do differently next time. That's all you can control really and all that matters in the long run. Remember the hiring manager decides within the first 5 minutes if you will move forward. Use that time wisely by answering his 2 most important questions .................
"Who are you?" "How are you going to help me?"

good luck

I hire managers. Most have 15-20 years of experience. Many of the sales reps who interview and want to claim age discrimination don't understand what's missing from their resumes. They have been career reps, 10, 20 or 30 years in, havie nothing on their resume but sales attainments, and now all of a sudden want management. It's OK to stay in sales and be an exceptional sales rep, but if you want promotional opportunities you have to show things in addition to just doing your base job. Serve on marketing boards, be the district computer guru, be the district trainer. Being a great sales rep is not enough unless you want to continue being a sales rep.

People are quick to claim discrimination because they refuse to look at themselves objectively. BTW, I'm female, in management, and 49.

You nailed it. This is such an obvious thing, yet many dont get it.

Zig Zigler once was asked by someone how to change their situation. His response was "If you keep doing the same thing day after day the same way, how can you possibly expect different results?"

Great advice for a aging female manager. (Just kidding.)

I would love to work for you. I am a top performer and after my top 5 pharma company reorganized, I attempted to get back into my old territory in the new town. Although the hiring DM wanted me in the position, the Region Manager said no way and I was replaced by a gentleman in his 20s for less than half the money. BTW, I am a 47yr old white male who just happened to win the top award 2 of the last 5 years. The EEOC could do nothing because the discrimination was so well orchestrated. Don't let anyone fool you. Age Discrimination may not be in each case but it is REAL!

Nothing you can do. In america the employer has you by the balls. Corporations break the discrimination laws all the time. Unless you have them on tape, in writing or can come up with a very credible witness who will testify that they screwed you because of your age you're fucked. Trust me. These people are very clever. They could come up with 1000 legitimate different reasons why they passed you over. You are fighting a losing battle, pard. Just lay low and wait for the chance to really fuck 'em over good. If you're smart and keep alert that time will come. Be patient. With time the elephant screwed the fly.

A veiled way that employers discriminate by age on job postings is to require, "no more than 2 jobs after college." Give me a break. THAT ought to be illegal too!

I saw a recruiter (for a pharmaceutical job) state "college graduate after 2000," no doubt to get "around" the employer's desire for a young sweet thing (ie, ex-cheerleader) as a pharmaceutical sales rep hire ...

The government ought to crack down on this unethical bullshit!
