Shame on you;Joe Schlitz,John Magee,Mark Bickley and Dave Peckman! You boys have come in and managed to do absolutely nothing except make excuses and tap dance. Year 1, AKA the 3rd relaunch was a total flop, I understand you lost over 1.5 share points. Year 2 you launch the "new aggressive campaign". Nice work, Share still stagnate. Whats next, I know! Lets reorganize and cut people. That'll be our excuse this year, too much change to turn the ship, that oughta buy us another year of this shit. You fuckers have robbed Shire blind for way to long and I think its time you pricks take a long hard look in the mirror and hold yourselves responsible and accountable for what you have created. A DISASTER!
Tomorow will be a sad day for some good people. Innocent bystanders to the carnage that you are responsible for causing. Noone knows how far and wide the cuts will run but if what you guys did to the managers is any indication then we can expect their to be no rhyme or reason for who gets cut and who gets a position. Based on what you've already done if I were a "legacy" rep I would be scared to death. It appears you guys have an agenda to rid the earth of anyone with any long term ties or loyalty to shire.
Again, shame on you. You guys are spineless, dickless twits that should resign and take responsibility for what you have done.

Isn't the problem a bit more simple? Like, for instance, doesn't the f__king thing taste like a huge stick of chalk?
I'm just saying... I don't think a dream team of genius execs could have saved this mess.
I, for one, think that these guys are doing a super job. Thumbs up, gentlemen.

Then why the hell don't they admit that is the problem instead of laying off good people. Fuck those guys! They have wanted an excuse to fire all the legacy reps and rds since they arrived.

Not many divisions our size have so many at the top (VP, NS, 2 ZD)...one or more of them need to be gone!

These guys are the masters of fingerpointing. It will be interesting to see if anyone let go tomorow will sue Shire and crush them. Their seems to be no rhyme or reason for who stays and goes. Favoritism has a hard time standing up in court. Normally when an unfortunate circumstance such as this arises their are certain criteria that are set and communicated to all that are affected by a downsizing. It appears that in this case it is a simple case of some guys hand picking those they like and those that they don't. That is a risky way to operate.
Anyhow, Like I said, these gentlemen are masters of the fine art of fingerpointing. Eventually they will be the only ones left to point at.
I agree with the original post. It is time for them to own up to this mess and get out!

Shame on these Renal good ol'boys...well said. Shire successfully launched Fosrenol through dedication and hard work. Yes, the product has had difficulty moving market share after year one and two, but to blaim that on the hard working Shire Renal reps is assinine.
Now, here to save the world, new upper management and new experienced renal reps. I am not putting down the new experienced renal reps...you guys were set up for failure. What do we know about history 101? You must know your history in order to stop yourself from repeating it. How in the world did we think that moving most renal reps to GI and CNS and replacing all new upper management would save us?
None of these guys knew what tactics were already used, what didn't work, and what did work.
EX: Ok, guys...go after 5.5-8. Well, we did that at the launch. We placed ourselves as 2nd to 3rd line. Ok, now go after 1st line. We also did this year 2 with Fosrenol. I could go on. Many approaches used under these new guys were already used prior to their hire.
So now these "unShire" upper managemet guys think that by getting rid on tenured reps and managers is the answer?
We are your guide...your history...your loyality.
Good sales reps are hard to find. Many reps jump from company to company. Your loyal employees ground the company and provide positivity and understanding of what Shire has historically stood and why we're different and better than big pharma.
This is a day I thought would never come. Shire making layoffs? Never in my experience with my company.
Upper management is making a mistake...a big mistake.
Good luck to all today.

I wish everyone could keep their job. I am one of the new reps & honestly (despite managment), this absolutly has been my favorite job and company in my career. Shire has great benefits & Fosrenol is the best binder (for those who want to chew) efficaciously.
Thank you all who have taught me & continue to teach me even now. I couldn't have said it better than the previous post to "hold your head up high".
Take care, good luck & God bless you & your families. I support myself and my child.....I hope I stay.

Wow, 15-20 reps gone. That is like most of the legacy reps right there. Maybe a couple of newbies.
Talk about shit hitting the fan. This is possibly the worst day in Shire's history....

Just a reminder, if you are a newbie, I am so glad that since you got here that things turned around. Keep your mouth shut and be thankful that you are still employed. This affected not only the individuals, but their families. Shame on you! Deuche bag.

This person is right on. I've never seen a company dick around with so many different "Marketing Messages," Excell sheets to fill in, Powerpoint slide sets, and sudden direction changes and last minute deadlines. In my long experience in Pharma, I've never seen such an unguided ship where the workers on the front lines are let go first, but no "Home Office" Sales Mgmnt heads have rolled, "Gone Down with the Ship." Let's not forget that our "Senior Sales Management" were just about all let go from "Big Pharma." Shire Corp., welcome to BIG PHARMA. Shire Renal is a Good Ole Boy network that has protected the elites in Wayne, PA. I never worked so hard for a good drug for so long, just to see Genzyme MCO rebate deals like Humana trump our superior product's science, efficacy, and better reps! Last year when Snr Mgmnt was saying "where are those new scripts disappearing to?" they should have not denied the chewing push back and got the powder formulation approved-like TUMS just did. Also, to totally miss the rebate game of the modern drug sales industry in the USA with Medicare D makes me wonder if anyone from the UK, save Robbie McArthy who seems upright, honest and very talented, ever got outside of the Wayne bldgs and the steakhouses Joe and John were taking those blokes (Scots-Angus?)out to. The company was actually on the cusp of a great message from the field with loads spent on FOT and the MOA video-probably too much. Not selling on price-another F-up, not to mention sampling the largest and maintenance tablet, 1g, which made many sick on the 1st chew. Try starting w/the 500mg and titrating up-Shire'd make more money with all tabs priced the same and patients increasing their daily intake of 500mg tabs as PO4 values were improving. Dumb. Talk about succumbing to slimy Genzyme marketing. I'm reminded of the British surrender to George Washington at Yorktown, VA. The Brits' band played "The World Turned Upside Down."
Someone Just Laid Off....Funny, a new sense of calm has pervaded me today; one I haven't felt since starting at Shire.

Good luck to those of you that now have massive territories and shrinking bonuses. Also, I think there are actually going to be some open req's across the country, so those of you just browsing should buck up... You too could apply for a Renal sales gig with Shire!

I am currently in GI but used to sell Fozzy and have many old friends on renal but didn't have the heart to call today.

"JB" in MI for one. He was well over forecast achievement, like 110%. Some others had done great all year but when T2 forecats finally came out, as has been typical, some of the best were now amongst what I've seen on here inappropriately termed "Bottom Feeders." If you did well one bonus period, you were made to pay with a 2.5 month delayed 2nd Trimester forecast sent you to The Bottom"-with no explanation as to how it was determined. Seems like Sales Mgmnt was "Cooking the Books." The stated reason for layoffs was not meeting an 11% market share in non-calcium based binder market vs Genzyme. Reps with shares better than that were let go, while the Failures at the top are having a beer now and telling each other what a hard, but necessary thing they did today, calling good reps to fire them in order to act like they were responding to "Business Pressures." How much more is Angus, or perhaps Robbie McArthy, going to take from these inept Big Pharma Vets before saving Shire funds on their bloated salaries and expense accounts. THEY are the ones who missed the Market Share of 11%! What a pack of assholes up there in PA!

TRUE...Rob took additional geography (Salt Lake) which had NO coverage and has DRAMATICALLY increased his sales to Quota percentage 115%!!!!!!!! Anyone who has picked up uncovered geography knows how difficult it is to make an impact, especially in such a short time.....Having met Rob I can tell you he IS a CLASS act and only wants to help make this division a success!
If you talk to him at meetings like I have, you will find that he has some great ideas and is more than willing to share them!
Get over your jealousy and get selling or we will ALL be gone!

No kidding, a bunch of those assholes needed to go. Bickley can get a job as a preacher and give his rants constantly. And the drunken one (of course I mean Schlitz) could become a bouncer in a tittie bar - after all, he loves to get drunk, hit on women, and intimidate people (a perfect fit)!

ddSo now what? Down to 60 reps...How the hell does dropping from 80 to 60 change anything? Well only that now reps will have double the territory, and no additional pay for the double amount of work that goes into adding hundreds of miles on the territory size. I am not complaining, but just making a point. There are some reps that will have 3 states, and if I checked last time, more area per rep equals less FREQUENCY with docs, which then prohibits growth....
I just don't see the point of laying off this many reps.

GIVE IT A FUCKING REST!!! Not doubting that rob has been effective, but my goodness! Let's see what happens in the long term when he has a territory that compares apples to apples. A few points about Captain- Know that he spends in excess of 10k a month to drive those sales in a moderately sized territory. For 10k a month you should be able to buy a little business especially when his territory is so top heavy with 70+ percent of his volume coming from 8 or so guys.
Finally, I wish that he would take some of his bonus $ and get his speech impedement fixed. He pronounciates words as if he has 3 large cocks stuck in his cheeks... You all know it is true. That being said, he is getting it done. goooooo Captain.

It's pretty f'd up to be knocking Rob in any way. He might not be liked, but you have to repsect him. Go back to knocking Joe and John.
BTW- What the hell does John do anway? Have conference calls with the ZDs (2 of them) to strategize? Sit in meetings and say "Wow Joe, sounds like a good idea." He's just a funnel that reciprocates inforation from Milton and Joe. CUT HIM. That would probabaly be equivalent to 3-4 reps right there. You are telling me that his imput and expertise have helped grow Fosrenol in any way? The reps are holding the ship.....not senior management.
Let me get this right. You have 2-3 Project managers, US commercial lead (manages everyone) John Manages 2 people, two ZDs managing 8 RDs to manage 60 reps??? So you are telling me that you need 12 people to manage Fosrenol and 60 reps?? Doesn't really make sense here

You guys are sooo missing the point. Sure Rob K. is an excellent rep, blah, blah, blah, but if one rep could save the business unit, there would have been no layoffs.
The problem is clearly with the senior management bozos (Magee, Bickley, Peckham, Schlitz) who do not have a clue. They haven't pushed for the sprinkle, they haven't pushed for a second product, and they simply do not understand the renal marketplace.
So continue to have your stupid spat, but I want to hear more about the horribly poor performance by our leadership team (of which NOT a SINGLE ONE lost their jobs)!

In defense of Rob, if you know Rob personally as I do you wouldn’t say that about him. He is helpful and encouraging to anyone who wants to succeed. He is focused and passionate about what he does and that may rub some people wrong at times especially those with a defeated attitude, but if you try what he suggest it works. I know, it did for me. He does not wait for someone to tell him how to get it done, he just gets it done.
It is interesting he has never missed a quota and has tripled his market share even though he was given Utah that watered down his market share from last year, and is still number one in the company and still has the highest market share in one of the largest volume territories in the West Zone. Anyone who sets a new company weekly sales record of 39 NRXs and 70 TRXs is not lucky or a suck up he is just good!!! Lay off Rob he is a good person.

I agree Kirk isn't a bad guy and why even bring him in to this reorganization conversation. Look at SF Region why are doing so well? How many Legacy Reps do they have? They have experienced reps with good attitudes and the main thing they have a great RD – Chris Raymond!!!!!!!! What reps do you think upper management wants to keep? If there are reps in territories for three years that can’t beat territories that don’t have reps in them, why you keep them? Go back to Enterprise until you learn how to discuss science!

That argument holds no water about a rep in CA vs Mich or Wisc. That is like saying houses are built differently in East, Midwest and West. They still use wood, concrete, siding and shingles--right?
Some call me a sooth sayer, I am guessing you work one of those territories where they build houses differently.
Stop crying, shut up and start delivering some performance

This sounds like a lame Rob Kirk analogy. I just want to say a few more things about him and then I think we should stop giving this guy so much attention.
The gloating on the conference call on wednesday after 25 co-workers had just been let go was appalling!
Do you really think that 70 Trx and 39 Nrx is a company record? Wow! You really are full of yourself! These numbers have been hit by Florida and Southern California reps several times in the past. You only have the right to gloat when you can maintain those numbers.
Rob, stop acting like you are the only one "PERFORMING". No we are all not performing at your "all-star" level but there are other reps out there that are delivering. FYI-this attitude is the reason why so many reps loathe you.

This is my first and only posting and I will say nothing more. Thanks for those of you who have been supportive. For those that seem to be frustrated, angry or what ever feelings you have about me personally it is not my attention to make any of you feel that way. Things change, I hope everyone does well in the future both those with Shire and those that have unfortunately had to move on. I don't want anyone to be in that position. There are allot of opportunities out there for all of us, lets focus on that.
Good luck!

Ladies and gentleman,
This excellent spelling and grammar is coming to you from your #1 sales rep. This is further proof that having a brain is not the key to selling Fosrenol.

Don't miss this one...
"Allot" = Assign, Apportion, Allocate.
"A lot" = many, numerous.

Well, it seems several of us are very qualified to teach English at the primary & secondary school level.
So what are your FOS #`s ??
Well, grammer skills sure do NOT seem to have much to do with sales numbers,...

It’s a shame to think that we work with professional people after reading the previous statements made within this page. To compare territory to territory is not fair to any sales rep, there are so many different variables that each of us face on a daily basis. The key difference that each of us has to worry about is the one that affects our numbers. It’s not the character or skill level of each rep, it’s the volume trends that each of these territories have that are actually being tracked by EV. There is no coincidence that the volume has increased on the west coast with volume of scripts and GA is made on performance of previous sales periods. Hence you see almost all of the reps meeting goal or above it for two periods in a row. There are trends on the East Coast as well as the Midwest where volume is disappearing with scripts (i.e. wholesale pharmacies, mail orders, independent insurance pharmacies), and Shire Renal has yet to address where the data is going. Therefore, you take sales numbers from previous years and include growth moving forward in shrinking volume territories, you end up with almost half the country struggling to make GA. Until this issue is addressed, you are going to continue to see a wide gap of reps from one end to the other, regardless of your experience and track record. Stop wasting time on ripping on other reps and focus on what Renal will do for us moving forward to get control of this data and provide each of us with a fair shot of representing what we can do.

What a dipshit. Certain houses don't work or blend into certain neighborhoods. Go to Detroit and build you a Mediterranean style - not an expensive one, one that's the same relative cost...and you won't sell it. Moron. The argument for variations among territories is completely valid.
By the way, the RK bashing is getting a bit asshole-ish.

Some good points here. Most territories are losing volume due to Davita RX and Independent pharmacies. This is why management at least gives the reps additional opportunties to earn more money by "re-adustments." I still want to know how we are suppose to grow MS faster with enlarging our territories to the point to the point of craziness....

Oh, you mean the same "adjustment" that gave some over 10% GA increase and others absolute 2-3%? There is no logical or fair explanation to make sense of any of these numbers or is there a pocket book deep enough to pay every little pharmacy for their data within each of our territories. My point is that corporate is aware of situations that are taking place more in some areas than others, and lack the respect to acknowledge it. If retail is down, then why are factory sales up? Where do you think those Rxs are going? White space data. It doesn't even have to be discussed among everyone, and it sure as hell is not enough reasoning to lay people off. Now we deal with territories the size of continents. Great idea.

So I guess I should not accept the interview with this division? Sound like not going well or just the babies come on this site - Everyone is downsizing if they can have less reps cover more gography. Selling this product is not overly clinical compared to others (onc) so seems like get the doc sth emessage - push for eval - and if it works get more pull through? WHat else am i missing.
PS too bad for the reps that got cut - sometime location location location is a bitch.

seems like the smart thing to do would be "accept" the interview, and wow 'em with your "overly clinical" experience with trial-eval-pullthrough. Then, ask that mgr "what your missing." Isn't that why you interview? You've been offered an interview, not the job. Take it.

Not Overly Clinical?? What the hell are you talking about? Have you ever actaully sold renal?? Renal is one of the MOST Clinical pharma sales in the industry. You need to combine a solid hospital/institutional rep with strong pharma skills to compete. There are major long term safety concerns and a competitor that will stop at nothing (many times illegally) to push it down. Don't come back to this site and don't interview for the position. This job will eat you alive with your lack of perspective on this subject.

Get over yourself! You sell a freakin' phosphate binder! You might as well be selling vitamins. If binders were really clinically challenging do you really think that doctors would allow dietitians to pretty much prescribe and dose them?? You must be one of these guys that is trying to make yourself feel better that you are a lowly binder rep. But you are just that, a binder rep.

Seems like the "illegal" stuff should get called out - if it happens. I just noticed every board for Shire is just like this one - no one likes leadership and snipers. To the renal being most clinical - this your first job since selling antibiotics or something? Do not kill your arguments before you start them with that nonsense. Try HIV, Oncology, MS or any other multidiscipline disease where it takes 4 or 5 docs just to treat and safety is a concern but just trying not to kill people with therapies that may or may not keep them alive sue to their genetics.
That argument is not really the post - any interview is good if you need a job to other poster, but from this board if you do not need a job or it looks that easy for you due to experience - may not be worth the time to get sucked in - even in this challenging economy.

I love to see the excitement and passion you all display. Yes it is a shame that the company has taken such drastic measures to cover their asses and lose site of accountability but it is a necessary evil. The product is not profitable and if JS JM DP and MB want to continue to play "soggy toast" every quarter when they get together at their North American Man Boy Love Association meetings (NAMBLA) they have to make the share holders in Shire believe they are doing their job. It's kind of like the anorexic girl I used to date- she wasn't fooling me by pushing her food around the plate; god I miss that skinny bitch! For those of you still around I will let you in on a secret. Forget the fact that Fosrenol blows and for that matter every other binder has inadequacies’. The main reason this product has failed has NOTHING to do with who is promoting it at a rep level. The problem is the FACT that at territory, region, zone, and national levels the key industry personnel does not know anyone at Shire nor do they have any relationship both personal and business. Let’s start with key physicians and clinic personnel in a given territory. Ask them who their reps RD is???? They don't know. Go to a Network meeting- pick one, 1, 2, 3, 4, 5 and so on. Ask members of these regions who they deal with at Shire- again they don’t know. Meet with members of NKF, ASN, CRN, ANNA, NRAA or local administrator meetings and they will all say the same thing- they don’t know Shire. Nationally with FMC and Davita-no relationship. Or the Small chain clinics like DCI, RAI, DSI, ARA, Liberty, Satellite, Innovative or US Renal Care. These groups account for over 40K patients? I think that’s a huge market to befriend! Look at any monthly Nephrology News & Issues or Journal of Renal Nutrition, etc and there is zero Shire presence. The bottom line is Shire has ZERO name. Those of you still there good job. Make your money but be weary. Those gone have many potential opportunities in Renal medicine and Dialysis services. As for me, I am enjoying the opportunity to relax on a hammock in Thailand while I explore my next great adventure of working for clowns that received their MBA online from the University of Phoenix. God Speed!

The only shame is that the US reps have only achieved an 8.2% market share. Compare this to the 20 other countries where Shire sell Fosrenol. There they have achieved market shares of more than 20% despite far more recent launches and much smaller sales teams and budgets. The shame is that the quality of the US sales reps must be about as low as you can get. Shire are so keen on Fosrenol that they are launching it in another 30 countries shortly. So what's the problem in the US?

Good product and a level playing field in europe with socialized medicine. Fosrenol's an excellent product and it doesn't boil down to cost for the patient with your system.
Let's here it limey prick, tell me how it's a level playing field here. Explain how that is so.

Whine, whine, whine. "Its not a level playing field here" blah blah blah. Well its not a level playing field in some of the other countries that each have more than a 20% market share. Pack your bags loser. At least Angus has seen the light with you guys and started to get rid of the worst of you. That wouldn't be too hard a choice me-thinks.
