Hylenex's launch in pediatric hydration is delayed yet again - this time to Q4 2009. Originally Hylenex was going to be launched in 2007, then 2008, then 2009 and now it looks like 2010. Or will it ever be launched? There seems to be an interesting conflict of interest between Baxter and Halozyme, from whom Baxter licenced Hylenex. The longer Baxter keeps Hylenex from the market the more it protects its IV business. My guess is that Baxter will never put any serious resources behind Hylenex and will be quite happy as a result. Originally Hylenex was going to be used in all sorts of fields - Baxter has steadily reduced all these down to basically just pediatric hydration. Halozyme on the other hand can only really sit back and watch. It has a very weak hand - Baxter is its partner in Gammagard (subQ) too and that product could really fly so they can't afford to upset Baxter. So what do you think - is Baxter deliberately delaying the launch of Hylenex and purposely limiting its potential markets just to protect its IV business? Answers please to Jonathan Lim at Halozyme.
