View Full Version : HCII vs. ThirdWave

I am the technical supervisor at a lab where I've just learned that we are meeting with someone next week to discuss the differences between ThirdWave and HCII platforms. I am told this is because of lack of internal controls with HCII and studies showing false positives with the test?

Can anyone direct me to these studies? I am trying to find some info on my own before meeting with reps from opposing companies and getting the sales spin from both. Thanks.

Are you kidding me? We have gone through the ThinPrep vs SurePath drama for the last decade. I'm not about to make us a target again for sales reps to harass with twisted data and marketing department talking points.

Seems that if the studies exist the name of the author and journal or even a link to the data should be simple enough to anonymously provide?

There are quite a few studies on HPV testing at these links...I think the studies you seek are there.

Dear Supervisor,

Please excuse our resident Qiagen troll. What you are told is true - our platform has internal control for EACH individual sample. Not having this control also contributes to their false-negative problem that we will tell you about next week.

C.C. Ginocchio documented a 7% false positive rate when comparing the platforms head to head. March 2008, Journal of Clinical Microbiology -

"The HC2 assay gave false positive results for 38 samples, including 13 samples with no HPV DNA detected by PCR and 25 samples with low risk (LR) HPV types shown in Table 3."

Ironically, this same cross-reactivity issue picks up type 66 added by the IARC to the list of oncogenic HR HPVs. But, since the cocktail does not directly test for 66, this is purely by the grace of God. Dumb luck! Of couse, that makes the sensitivity unknown.

We look forward to discussing this and other considerations with you next week!

Sincerely,
Your HPV Testing Vendor To-Be

Go to PubMed and type in "Invader HPV". 5 or so studies come up with the analytical data from 4 Invader HPV vs HC2 studies and a study of the HPV 16/18 genotyping assay. They're all very positive for the Invader test.

The real comedy is coming from your employer. Perhaps you should ask them why they are making this SOOOO easy?

Wow. If the intellectual depth of the above two posts are indicative of the intelligence of the average Qiagen rep, this is going to be a bloodbath.

Didn't you mom provide most of the positive controls for your HPV assay to begin with?

i dont think it will be a bloodbath between reps. labs want an alternative to HCII --- i think its going to be fun watching quiagen lose business left and right!

Hi Dr,
Remember a couple of years ago I was bad mouthing HPV saying you did not need to screen? Well now we have an hpv test and you really need to use it.

I wonder how many of those conversations will happen? Don't forget all of you TP tools went around with brochures saying hpv was not needed when Digene first hit the market. Looks like it's time to dust those off lack of sales aids and remind the Dr's what crappy reps you are.

Call me when you get approval.

CC will be eradicated by then.

Your QIAGEN rep-please add spelling to your things to conquer list.

Hi Cytotech,

You know how we've been running around the last few years talking shit on cytology based on conventional smear data and promoting HPV as a primary screening test based on........well, no clinical trial and no reverence for cost per life year saved? Nor ASCCP, ACOG, or ACS screening recommendations?

Well, now that we hear your largest vendor has an approved HR HPV panel AND 16/18 genotyping we'd really like to put all that behind us. You know we were just joking, right? Just because we've criticized you to gynecologists and failed to support you at local, regional, and national meetings for years (even though your profession performs better than 90% of the tests that we sell every year) doesn't mean we don't value your position in medical decision-making at the laboratory level.

That is where this battle is going to be lost or won, of course. Now we realize that, and we'd like to schedule a meeting with you, your lab director, and pathologists to try to talk you out of switching to a superior product by a company that you have long and deep relationships with, who has much more flexible pricing options, and who has treated the laboratory customer with much more respect than we have.

How does next week look for you? I'd like to get in front of you before Hologic takes all 50,000 of the HPV tests that you order annually in one foul swoop. Call me. If I miss quota again this quarter, this is a bad time for a medical sales rep to try to find another job. Please call. Baby needs a new pair of shoes! Seriously, call me. Please. You will call, right? Hello? Hello?

Insolently,
Your Qiagen Representatives
