Help please.

I am interviewing for a Contrast Media Sales position. The hiring Manager said this was a 24/7 job, nights and weekends. I took this to mean that there is always something that needs attention, computer work, etc. Which is fine, I'm used to getting work done on my own time. However, thinking back on the interview, could he have meant that I need to be on call nights and weekends? Can anyone tell me if being on call is part of the CM Sales Rep responsibilities? I am a single mother with a 10 month old baby and wouldn't be able to leave in the middle of the night if I received a call. Thank you for any information you can provide.

He was testing you. Not a 24/7 job. I got the same comment from my hiring manager many, many years ago, and when I rode with a rep he referred to as his "hardest working team member," she revealed openly that she was home by 2:30 everyday. Never worked a night or weekend unless I was hosting a dinner program or working a regional/national conference.

Don't get me wrong, when you have a big deal at stake, the time and work expected of you amplifies exponentially, but if you take care of your customers and do your job, it's a cake walk of a job. In fact, if you're good, it's down right easy . . .

I was with this company in this position for 15 years. Yeah, there was paperwork at night and that's not uncommon in many sales jobs.

With the exception of an occasional medical conference, an occasional dinner program (and I could count those incidents on the fingers of one hand every year), I rarely had to deal with being "on call." The worst that might happen is a key account ran out of contrast over the weekend or on the night shift and you might have to borrow a box from another to tide them over.

Could part of the reason for his questions to you was to discourage a "single mother with a 10 month old baby" from getting a job with GE because he was worried you'd put your kid before your job with GE?

Thank you. Your response was very helpful. To answer your question, I hope he wasn't discouraging me since he told me he has a baby of his own. We will see.

The "GE Philosophy" is to work folks to the bone. An employee with a life outside GE is not an employee GE wants to keep.

Or as someone once reminded me, GE does not stand for "Good to Employees."
