Contacted a recruiter about an opportunity with Novartis, they said they are seeing more resumes coming from solid Novatis reps every day. kind of warned me away. They steered me towards several other opportunities.

Just a guess, but with the malignant corporate culture, many of the ambitious or high principled reps have dived out. In addition, at least in the Chicago region, there are 2 of the most toxic regional managers in the industry. Know of a couple President club winners who left right after the trip rather than be threatened on a daily basis.

Where did you get your MBA? They must not have offered any English classes. But i guess you are DUE...What a shame...you admit in your post that there is bias in promotions. I grow so tired of this junk...This is the reason I left Novartis recently.

Novartis has grown to the point where it must balance legal and performance issues. If you attend senior leadership meetings, quotas are discussed openly. That includes racial and gender quotas. I know because as a former "developmental candidate", I had the opportunity to participate in these meetings.

In fact, I had interviewed for a DM opportunity, and I lost the opportunity to a minority, job-share candidate. I sought out this opportunity b/c of its location. I was not encouraged to apply. During the interview process, it was evident from the start that the decision had been made. This candidate had NO developmental experience. I later sat in a meeting, in which the participants didn't know I had participated in the interview process, where senior management discussed that the candidate had been chosen to improve the "diversity" within the business unit. Pure and simple.

So don't think it doesn't happen. It does. If you think "reverse racism" corrects a past wrong, you are certainly entitled to your opinions.

I chose to leave b/c I no longer wanted to be part of a company that participated in such behavior. I didn't sue, like many "minority" employees have. I just found something better.

I am now in a management position, and I have the opportunity to hire. I choose to hire based on qualifications. Thankfully, my company is small enough and smart enough to support that philosophy.

This outfit has become an advocate of reverse discrimination hiring, and everyone here knows it. Paulo Cosat and the HR VPs flew all over the country hiring mainly unqualified blacks starting about 4 years ago. I was attending a DO physicians national convention, when Paulo and his train of YES men arrived at the exhibit hall. They all walked by large exhibit and promptly started interviewing black "candidates" over at the United Negro College fund exhibit. I and several other reps witnessed them talking to these folks and then escorting them over to side rooms for their "job interviews". Of course they completely ignored the 8 of us working at our large exhibit booth, and never even walked by to say hi. Anyway, three blacks were hired and NONE of them had pharma experience, BUT they did previously sell Verizon cellphones. So, I guess that made them qualified. They were all very nice people, but I was upset when I was told by our DM to mentor two of them for their training exams. This occurred after both of them failed their tests, but were actually given 2 other chances to "pass" them. How nice. This situation happened at dozens of locations throughout the US, and I have talked with four other reps who witnessed the same stuff that I did, in their cities.

If you don't think managers are being forced to hire black candidates talk to anyone in manager development or anyone who has sat in on an interview with a manager. I know one manager who was told to hire only black candidates to fill her entire team for the N6 expansion (contract). I'm sure there are just as many qualified black candidates as there are white but don't force it. If it happens let it happen. It does get a little discouraging. I don't know why a manager hasn't spoke up to HR or someone that may listen and stop this crap. Oh wait , HR is prob behind it all.

This person obviously got their MBA at an all black school or took some other more qualified applicants spot because of their minority status! To the original question: I left because of money...pure and simple. Yep...I'm a whore. Sure, I agree with a lot of what people have written. Poor management, inappropriate quotas, poor hiring practices...the list goes on and on. But bottom line? I wanted what I perceived would be a better job. Fortunately I found it. I have a lot of friends still at Novartis and I'm actively engaged in getting them out. Not just out of Novartis, but out of of big pharma. I chose a medical device job, but I know a few who have completely left the world of medical.
Don't get me wrong...the pharma job can be a good one. But so much of it depends on your manager and to some extent, the RD. I had three different managers in my 4 years at Novartis (no big shocker). Of the three, only one of them really "got it". He knew what rep life was like and didn't force us to "drink the company kool-aid" like a lot of other managers. Interestingly, he left Novartis after three years of management and went into device sales. He got tired of the BS too.
I left about the time Novartis was giving original timelines for new product launches and the mass-hiring began. Why leave when the "future looked so bright"? Too many reps in a POD, not enough personal accountability, hiring decisions for new reps, low pay...again, all the reasons we've heard before. Unfortunately for Novartis, there have been a few setbacks with launches, and now with the withdrawl of Zelnorm (a drug I launched), I'm curious to see where the company with go. Of course Novartis will still succeed. They have way too much money in the bank. And honestly, I think they do have some blockbusters in the pipeline. But at the rep level? It's going to be the same 'ol same 'ol.
You've heard it before from the reps who have been around for a while. They say stick it out during the tough times, ride the wave with the good times, and it all kind of balances out. I believe that. The question is...can you survive the tough times when you have an incompetent manager riding your ass? Or when your'e in a POD where more than half the counterparts give a less-than-stellar effort? Or when your goals are so out-of-whack that your rankings suffer? (After all, it is all about the rankings.) Tough questions.

I bet you a million dollars there are more unqualified whites here than blacks. in my training class some dumb ass white bay did not know how to say efficacy or know the meaning oh yeah one better. How about another one flunked out of training. Out of one thousand 10 were sent packing non were black all were white. By the way I did not know Imus worked for Novartis

My comments regarding unqualified black reps is both accurate and truthful. Sure, there are many unqualified white reps and they are weaned out. HOWEVER, I have NEVER observed even ONE unqualified black rep being let go. Just the multiple test taking routines alone prove that point. I have never seen a white rep given FOUR chances to re-take their training and other field exams. But, it happens ROUTINELY with black reps, and we/you all know why.

If you are going to post a racial bitch fit, please learn to use proper grammer and learn how to spell. Go back and read what you wrote before you hit submit....I guess you have to Ax yourself whether or not you learned how to form an intelligent sentence from your prolific BS and MBA? I have had 4 managers in my pharma career and two of them were black and two were white. The two black managers were and are the laziest SOB's you could imagine. Not a stereotype(this is the correct spelling..see yours above), but factual by the actions that they did and didn't take. You can turn a blind eye and promote(if you make manager) someone because of talent and performance, or you can hold your fist in the air and "unite"...you make the call.

Many of the blacks who were hired several years ago were not qualified, except to sell cell phones. And that's the type of sales many blacks did before Paulo and his YES men flew around the US hiring blacks to meet the EEOC quota. I try to treat each person as an individual, but crooked assholes like Jackson and Sharpton will always make black people seem like a second echelon group of losers. There are numerous examples in Novartis that unqualified people got the jobs because they are minorities. Just as LG RAM in FL. She doesn't know the first thing about being a RAM and never had the experience. Just because she was friends with the other spic cunt who was also promoted as DM down their made a double hit for EEOC.

Neither had the experience needed to have those jobs, and it showed!!

Contacted a recruiter about an opportunity with Novartis, they said they are seeing more resumes coming from solid Novatis reps every day. kind of warned me away. They steered me towards several other opportunities.

They, we are asking that any promotion or job be based solely on merit NOT the color of your skin. Your question "what have black people done" to deserve this is looking in the wrong direction. The question you should be asking is what haven't black people done for themselves and why after not having improved their lot in 130+ years are we responsible for taking care of them. Let's review...1 in every 3 black men aged 13-30 are in some phase of the correctional system...not one neighborhood where blacks have moved in has prospered, on the contrary these newly transformed areas have become blighted with prostitution, gang activity, and crime...70% of black children are born to single moms...the higest defaults on property taxes are from predominately black neighborhoods...the list could go on all night so let's cut to the chase. I grow so tired of this junk...This is the reason I left Novartis recently.

Novartis has grown to the point where it must balance legal and performance issues. If you attend senior leadership meetings, quotas are discussed openly. That includes racial and gender quotas. I know because as a former "developmental candidate", I had the opportunity to participate in these meetings.

In fact, I had interviewed for a DM opportunity, and I lost the opportunity to a minority, job-share candidate. I sought out this opportunity b/c of its location. I was not encouraged to apply. During the interview process, it was evident from the start that the decision had been made. This candidate had NO developmental experience. I later sat in a meeting, in which the participants didn't know I had participated in the interview process, where senior management discussed that the candidate had been chosen to improve the "diversity" within the business unit. Pure and simple.

So don't think it doesn't happen. It does. If you think "reverse racism" corrects a past wrong, you are certainly entitled to your opinions.

I chose to leave b/c I no longer wanted to be part of a company that participated in such behavior. I didn't sue, like many "minority" employees have. I just found something better.

I am now in a management position, and I have the opportunity to hire. I choose to hire based on qualifications. Thankfully, my company is small enough and smart enough to support that philosophy.

Good for you. I'm in the Management Process and was just sold out by a counterpart who is in the MDP too. She turned me in because I made copies of a free domain screening tool (at the speaker's request). Watch you backs . .

My manager is looking for a N2 spot to fill and openly said that he will get extra recognition if he hires a female and much more if he hires a black person. He asked me to think of any black drug reps in my current territory and get me their phone numbers.

Sad that this is such a high criteria over being legitimately qualified for the position.
