Anyne here have any experiences, good or bad, with buying Certified Pre-Owned vehicles? I am thinking of getting a 5 series BMW that is certified pre-woned but I dont wanna buy a lemon and cannot afford a brand new 5 series on this pharmac salary.

If you do not buy "certified" buy the service agreement. Do your comparisons on "certified" vs non-certified with service agreement policy. ESPECIALLY on BMW's, etc: parts and repair costs are VERY high.

Buy a Lexus or Infinity and you won't need a warranty.. I've owned a BMW 5 and they suck! It was in the shop more than I had it.. Drive line vibration they could "NOT" fix numerous electrical and suspension components plus the BMW wheels are very, very soft. If you live where there are pot holes plan on buying at least two to three new rims a year.. Stay away from both BMW & Mercedes! My wife is now driving a Lexus after having owned a Mercedes E320 4Matic & a BMW 5T and it has not been in the shop once. No rattles or squeaks, no vibrations, no computer glitches, no bent rims and it's already got 85k on it... I got rid of the BMW at 40k due to so many repairs. Check out some of the on line BMW forums and you'll see what I mean about mechanical issues.. If you want more performance than a lexus than drive an Infinity they scream!

This poster is right on the money. I had a mercedees benz suv (the small one) ML320 bought it preowned. It was a nightmare!!!! It was in the shop all the time always a problem electrical as well. It became such a problem I would use my wives car to do my pharma job but my wife had to deal with the Mercedes and had enough. So we bit the bullet ate the loss and traded it in and bought a preowned Lexus IS300. I love this car! It drives and handles great it is a couple of years old when I bought it and the only reason it has been in the shop is for oil changes and having it detailed to keep it clean. Nothing has gone wrong with it and it has almost been 2years.

Say what u want to say the Japanese make a great car nothing goes wrong with them.

Since I traded my car in I have ran into many former Mercedes ML320 owners and have heard their horror stories just like mine.

Thanks guys... I think I'll stay away from Mercede and Beamers... what about Audi A6 pre-owned? I think they are at the same level as a 5 series and the Audi website says they do a 300 point inspection. Anyone had any Audi A6 experiences?

Not an AUDI A6, but my 16 year old is driving our 1991 AUdi 90, it has 165,000 on it and runs like a champ. Only issue is cost of any service if you go to the dealer. I have a friend who works on Porsches and Audis, that cuts the cost a lot.

I have recently worked in the automotive field and as a previous poster said buy a Lexus or Infinity. Lexus (made by Toyota) has the very BEST transmission on the road. They are not perfect but are very good. Transmission repair is one of the most expensive auto repair bills so thats what I look at most. Infinity is 2nd and Honda is 3rd. Notice how all those are Japanese made? Curious huh?

Stay away from Audi's they are horrible and cost an arm and a leg to fix. I bought an A6 preowned (I fell in love with the style etc. I was stupid). This experience was a living hell every week something would go wrong at the worst time. When I was driving around Boston to my sales calls it would die, it was getting so I could not do my job. It was in the shop all the time and it only had like 36,000 miles on it and some change. I would wakeup wondering every day if my car would start ( a really bad feeling). I had enough and traded it in and bought a Lexus. Now all is well I will stick to Japanese only.

Thank you. OP here... was it bought from a private individual or was your A6 bought through the Certified Pre-Owned program at Audi? The salesperson says that the warranty covers it for anything that may go wrong with it.

Look, if you are interested in used and have 30 grand to blow. I would get a fully restored sixties classic. Plenty of them around and they will never depreciate.

That warranty only lasts so long. If you want to drive it for a few months and sell it, go with the audi. But you are buying junk.

Why is Audi so bad???? It'snot like it is a piece of shit. I would rather drive an A4 than a 3 series BMW or an A6 over a 5 series and DEFINATELY an A8 over anything even a Porshe!

DO NOT BUY AN AUDI A6 PRE-OWNED! I owned a 2003 A6 Avant wagon and got totally burned. When I bought the car no one at the dealership could provide me with the small print of what was covered under the Audi Certified Pre-Owned warranty. But I still signed and figured that on Monday they would fax it like they said. So three weeks into owning this vehicle I run into Starbucks to get a cup o joe and when I return... no start? I call Audi Roadside & four hours later someone finally shows up. They charge the battery and guess what it starts! I then drop it at the dealer so they can figure out what went wrong. When I show up at the end of the day I'm presented with a bill for $327.00 in diagnostic fees. "Sorry sir we could not duplicate the problem" . I was furious so I called Audi America and they confirmed that the Audi CPO Warranty does not cover diagnostic fees only the part and replacement labor of the $2.00 part. Next my LED cluster on the dashboard dies "sorry sir that's not a covered item" now this is not an incandescent bulb but an entire LED display for a $2300.00 repair bill. I've now owned the car for approx 8 weeks and I start to hear a clunk on the front end a problem well known on all the Audi boards but again "sorry sir that's not a covered item" cha ching$1684.00. Oh yeah and it still won't start intermittently. Needless to say I did not keep the car long enough to find out just what the Audi CPO actualy does cover and traded it in on an Infinity FX35 and lost $8500.00 in 10 weeks. I have not had one single problem with the Infinity & will never ever buy any product made by either Porsche, Audi or Volkswagen. I'll stress it again DO NOT BUY AN AUDI!!!!!!!!!!

A buddy of mine sold Audi's and Porsche's and the dealerships do not make that much money off the cars believe it or not. All the money is made at the service centers when they replace your LCD displays for $3500 or headlights for $500. They can take as long as they want which is what the dealership wants to charge you more and find more things wrong to make money off of u who buy these certified cars.

OP here...

Okay.. so Audi A6 is apiece of shit. And believe me, I am sorry for all the unfortunate events that happened to you guys with Audi's... but if they had so many problems then how come I never hear brand new Audi's havingproblems? Only used Audis? And if it is a used car issue then why don't other used cars like Lexus, etc have issues?

Look man, I liek nice cars, and I think Audi A6 looks nice. I know it ain't a Porshe or a Ferrari but it is what I can BEST AFFORD... Nothing against japanese cars but how do you expect me to holdmy head up high driving a Lexus or an infiniti? all those german cars are now overshadowed by japanese cars in terms of reliabilty, handling, and overall value. i've had 2 models of mercedes, and an audi quattro wagon that I bought used from a friend's expiring lease, and have since switched to an infinity 35 coupe that i bought new last year. there is no comparison in terms of handling and overall satisfaction. those german cars are past their glory days. i have talked to friends who've had the newer BMW's and Mercs and Audis and they absolutely can't compare to the high end Japanese cars like the Lexus, Infiniti, and Acura. If you want great value, the Acura RL at $42K base is absolutely better than the most expensive S class Mercedes. even pre-owned lexus is great.

agree with the above. hey, if you drive one of them kraut cars, maybe you'll impress some people but girls soon find out that you're a pharm rep, okay maybe even a DM, but they're no fools. they know you're just one rung above a transit worker or a publc school teacher, and if you take them out to dinner in your bimmer to Red Lobster or Cheesecake Factory, that confirms you're just a fucking cheap guy driving a Bimmer trying hard to impress. be happy in your company cordoba or taurus and spend money on keeping in shape at the gym every day; learn golf or tennis; and the money you save, invest in the market. that way, you could be in fat city in your mid-thirties, then buy a Porsche - now there's a Teutonic car guaranteed to impress. and by the way, long before that you should be fully invested in a condo with world class furnishings. been there done that. from college to the first 12 years of my career, all i did was eat macaroni and cheese at home to save, and in those days we had a lot of dinner programs, so it's not like i was malnourished. but hey, a lot of my friends and myself lucked out on the tech boom - and i maintained my gig at big pharma because (in those days), we only worked 10am to 1pm max, and we had plenty of time to learn investing, hang out at the gym, and play golf at big pharma expense. i have since gotten married, bought myself a used Porsche for $32 grand to save on the house and the babies, and my wife enjoys the big pharma minivan on the weekends. whenever there's talk of lay-offs or realignment, i just shrug. what are they gonna do to me? take away my minivan?

To OP:
I know you have a thing against Lexus, b/c you think it's a glorified Toyota. I understand what you're saying, but if quality is important to you, go with the Lexus. I have owned 2 PreOwned Lexus cars and both were incredible. Literally, never had to have a single repair, ever! Had one of them well over 100K miles. Sold it for top value because they hold their resale value well.
Sounds like you want something sporty... take a look at the brand new IS 350 from Lexus. It is special, let me tell you. I am struggling myself right now on whether to trade my bigger ES300 in for one or keep what I have. I love that new IS 350. Just take a look at one!

Lexus is the way to go. I bought from a dealership and have been very happy. Paid less then one half the original sticker on a previously leased vehicle turned in at 18 months on a 24 month lease. Have had the car 10 years and have yet to put any money in it other than routine maintenance. Husband drives BMW performance cars--when he (finally) drove my SC300 6 cylinder he was shocked at the performance. Car still gets admiring looks--classic style--just a beautiful vehicle. So, for a lady who has to worry about getting taken at the repair shop, etc, go with a Lexus. My husband's BMW is in the shop a lot. Also, Lexus dealerships around the country now post certified vehicles on ebay. That is a good way to compare costs, etc, to do a little research before you actually buy. I would never buy from an individual on ebay, but a Lexus dealership listed vehicle would be worth a look.

Just buy a 2003 0r 2004 Mustang Cobra. Quiet Comfort Speed 390 Horses Affordable and if you drop 1500 bucks on bolt ons it will produce well over 500 horses. Before you flame me for comparing it to the likes of a BMW 5 series, drive one. It is impressive. The repair costs are minimal when compared to a foreign luxury/sports class.

Agreed on performance for the Mustang. But for some reason the insurance on a Mustang is simply prohibitive compared to that of the "luxury" Lexus in my area. Lexus also does not have repair costs like the BMW. I just put the extra I would have paid for insurance on the payment for the luxury car, which also retained its value better than the Mustang. But, as far as performance is concerned, you are right.

Mustangs or Cobras somewhat fast, and that's it. The car is a tin can with a big motor and thats all it ever will be. If you wanna do break stands in your H.S. parking lot to impress pre-pubescent boys, buy a Mustang. If you're going to buy american, A nice used c-5 vette will beat a mustang hands down, quality, handling, style. Ford's designers have have their heads up their asses for years, the car is f--king goofy looking. BTW if you spend a little $$ on your C-5 and buy yourself a blower, you can leave cobra owners holding their dicks on the starting line as I've done many times....Like those tail lights, do ya??
