I have been through 5 mergers and I have seen all of the politics that goes along with it. I am detailing 2 great products and even after 20yrs I am having a ball.
As far as I am concerned we get paid to talk to our friends every day. That does not mean that we have our share of tough days. For the most part in this industry we have tons of freedom and that is why I do not wish to be promoted to the office. This job is not for everyone but it sure is for me.

When I make this comment I am generalizing but....Here is my observation with 20yrs in the business. Women complain that they are not being promoted. They say it is discriminaton.
The young women that I see today want it all. They want the $$ the position, the marriage and the kids. Something has to give. Usually I see that the job takes a back seat .Now her team mates end up with most of the responsibility for the Territory. If she gets promoted to manager usually she has something to prove as she is insecure with her abilities and as such micromanages everyone because this is her comfort zone.Do not get me wrong , I have had my fill of poor male managers. But I believe it takes a very special women to manage people in this business. Why is it that most of the female managers I have encountered are pit bulls? For that matter most of the new 20 something female reps are pushy, aggressive and think they are gods gift to Pharma.
Any comments from 40 something experience?

You at least admit you are generalizing. Come on, you claim to have that many years in this industry? Well, if that is true then you can take you personal trial and start counting the 'N" for the number of managers that you have had. Then look at the percentage that were women. Hmm. I will venture a guess and say that it is a small sample size. Relevant? Usually! You then go on to admit that you think that they want it all. Don't the male managers get to have the same children as well as the work side of life? That looks like it would be similar. How about your own bias. You think that these women are pit bulls. Perhaps no different then the men. That would make them the same too. Why should they act differently (if indeed the act like that) then the men? Are you saying that a female manager should act differently then a male manager? I would not think that would be acceptable. Did you ever think that the position demands that a person be assertive, organized, focused, and be able to demonstrate leadership? It is likely that YOU treat the manager who is a female differently. You project your own assumptions onto their behavior and you filter out the positives that they do possess. If a woman is promoted then she sacrifices the same things that a man does in the same management role. If you really took a look around you would notice that the % of women in the field force vs. the management ranks is unbalanced. That would mean that it is harder for a woman to rise into those ranks because of bias. Perhaps it isnt discrimination but it is not equitable. If you have been in this industry for that many years I sure hope that you know what "data" is. You should know that what you need to make a decisive judgement is good clinical data- and your "study" is flawed!
