I'm currently a pharm rep and I want to break into devices. I have an interview comming up for conceptus but the pay seems low. They want to start me as a sales assoc. first. I'm use to 90k can a sales assoc really make this in California? And how long does it take to become a territory mgr? Please i really need honest advice before making this move.

Here is what I would do----call a hospital in your territory and tell them what you are considering and ask for the current reps number. Ask how many reps have their been in the CA territories, ask to see the commission plan and really understand how that works. Ask the average length of time an associate rep stays in a training role. Look at these boards and see what some think of the potential manager you may have. I would blindly get as many reps as you possibly can and call all of them in confidence. I'd balance that against what you could make and then go from there.

Make sure you understand what is really going on and don't just be sold by the thought of what surgical devices might be and jumping at the first thing. Good luck.

What area of California are you applying for?

I completely agree with the first response (second post). Wouldn't worry about calling the current reps either. If they-re good, they'll recognize your genuinely looking out for what's best for you as well as them, since they will be your co-workers (and you'll be doing a lot of the leg work for them as an Associate).

I would be interested to hear what current Territory Managers and Associate Reps have to say about the OP's questions.

The So. Cal manager is a wreck, she is extremely over bearing and does not understand the managed care landscape. It is a great product and most of the docs are easy to work with. It is a great stepping stone as long as you don't stay more than a few years. You really don't want to make a career out of this company as they are just trying to ramp up sales so that the company can be bought. As an associate rep you will be doing a lot of what you are currently doing, office calls and not a lot of OR time. As for the Nor Cal manager, steer clear of this guy, he is a horrible manager and will drive you insane, you will regret working for him.

    Good Luck

Almost a new rep every year, longest have been 2 years other than the Kaiser strategic account manager. Tough managed care landscape, IPA's won't allow docs to do the procedure in their office. They used to pay well, but now full line reps in CA make less than 120K.

this is just not true - reps make ~$$200-250k if they are decent at their job. They don't hold let slackers coast......maybe that's why you sound bitter. Many reps have been there 3-6 yrs.

You my friend are out of your mind. Only 1 or 2 reps at Conceptus have made that kind of money and they are not making that anymore. Many reps does not equal the average, check with HR and see. You'll find I'm right. Keep drinking the coolaid.
