    Saw my first case recently.
A few thoughts about why the robot trend will not last.
    1. It easily adds 30 min to hour to each case just to set up the robot. TIME IS MONEY and these cases eat up OR time.

    2. Where is the proof that robot cases are clinically more efficacious than standard lap surgery. I'm suppose to believe that more "precise cuts" is going to lead to quicker healing time for patients. Proof is in the pudding and right now all their is, is delicious looking pudding.

My conclusion is Robotics is catching on with hospitals because it is becoming another marketing tool so they can tell their pt's that they have Robotics. Thats it... period.

    THAT IS THE RUB....
REALLY ROBOTICS IS CLEARLY THE BIGGEST MEDICAL SCAM OF THIS CENTURY!!!

....wow, you may really be on to something here. I wonder why no one else has made such an astute observation. Wait, they have, and nobody cares! There are no shortage of clinical articles on why and how the increased cost and time do not correlate to improved outcomes vs. traditional lap cases, yet the legend grows. It defies the vert logic of evidence based-medicine on most procedures.

My hats off to them. Better outcomes or not, it's here to stay

    I love this post.

It makes me think back to all those times when I thought car phones were a fad (I could just pull over and use the most convenient pay phone), or the microwave (my stove was awesome), or even airplanes (horses and trains were just fine).... And who needs air conditioning? I can just open my windows.

Even if robotics is as inefficient as you say above, the fact remains that it will continue to improve (whether it is dV, or another company, or another generation robot).

Their is an arrogance and an ignorance in the replies to the initial post.
Make no doubts about it, if the economy continues to get worst and hospitals continue to close robots, or nice to have toys will become a thing of the past.

We are in a "Need to have environment" and it's clear to many doctors and administrators that robots are at this point nothing more than a gimmick.

The noise around this thought is growing.

Whatever, dude. Personally, few things would make me happier than to see hospitals come to their senses regarding robotic surgery, but I see no sign of it happening anytime soon. Even if they wanted to, there is still the matter of justifying the $2 million they shelled out to bring it in.

Intuitive's monopoly is the reason it's so expensive. If and when a viable competition comes to market, or economic factors dictate a potential reduction in procedures, they will just start discounting the disposables to placate their customers. It ain't going away.

go to dotmed.com and you can buy all of the divinci robots you want (cheap too!). reality is setting in that there was a little bit of smoke and mirrors in that pitch.

    What an ass.
The main difference is the things that you mentioned as fads such as car phones....oh wait that was a fad you fucking imbecile. Who the fuck uses car phones.

Ok....now to your other points microwaves, airplanes, air conditions...True. They are not fads.

Big difference between the above mentioned and robotic surgery is those things actually improve life you fucking moron.

The only thing robotic surgery does is take up space and eat up o.r. Time....

    Prove me otherwise!

Hey Mr Cranky, the proof is all around you.

Every aspect of your life today is different than it was 20/10/and even 5 years ago. Computer assisted technology is around every single thing we do. Surgery is simply the next frontier.

Like I said, even if ISI fails, and daVinci goes away, there are about 20 other companies right behind them ready to find a way to make it better.

If you want to only judge progress based on short term clinical outcome, fine... I'll admit there is still room to improve... But you are seriously missing the bigger picture.

And oh, before I forget, go eat sh!t dick boy.

    Dear "eat shit dick boy"
I m going to respond but this shit is weak bro.
Just because, should never be an answer.
Secondly, I understand that technology advances do evolve our life, but you shouldn't assume all technology hang around. I.E Laser Disc Players, 3D-dying, CAR PHONES, etc.

Non- functional technology always goes the way of the DODO bird.

I'm not say robot surgery will meet this fate, but in its current ideration it probably will unless it evolves and customers can start to see value in it. Right now it is nothing more than this generations must have gimmicky med tech product.

Please respond I needs some funny shit to laugh at.

Not the original poster, but you're an idiot. "technology advances do evolve our life?!" That doesn't even make sense. Our lives evolve w/ technology, douche!

You're contradicting yourself. Car phones are now cell phones, disc players are now MP3 players. That was the point of the original poster. daVinci is on it's 3rd generation in 12 years. We too are evolving!! With new advancements we cater our technology to it.

Go bark up another companies poster. We're bored w/ you.

Not sure either way on the Robot as I am in Gas and Oil Sales. I come on the CP from time to time to see if I can get some Investment Info. Came across this discussion as Intuitive is a monster. Like a lot of things in the medical industry sights have been set and shots are starting to be fired across the bow. Came across this article in the Seattle Times, not very flattering for the Robot. Wonder how long it will take the Insurance Companies to kill the golden goose. Any how like all things (Except Gas and Oil, although they have tried) when it starts to cost bigger, more powerful institutions money(Insurance in this case), it tends to go by the wayside. Hope not. Here is the article.

young buck , who works for intuitive . Your arroagance is not entitled because of your sense of self worth associated with what you do. SHUT up and sell some procedures so my stock will continue its payoff to me . Most of you on this board were not on board 2 years ago . So you went to a non skilled gyn who could not do straight stick work and you think because you converted him to robotic cases you re that good. NO the ROBOT IS NOT GOING AWAY AND THE TECHNOLOGY WILL ONLY GET BETTER > BUT remember if you forget your past you are condemed to relieve it . ASK JM AND JA what happened to automated intruments when ETHICON ENDO got in the Lap business in the 90's . The same will happen to you when you get acompetitor. SO SHUT up and save as much as you can ... YOU WILL HIT THE WALL SOON young grasshoppers
