    include? I just received a verbal offer with Novartis and the manager said they would be doing background check which included "employment verification"........now I'm super nervous bc I did lie about a start date with a former employer. Please give any info you know.

    If you lied either on the your resume or what you told the manager, you could be in trouble............. However we all forget about exact start and finish dates so if it can be explained you should be ok.

    The only thing I lied about are the start dates/end dates of one job.......I had a gap in work history and didn't want that to look bad. So I extended a former job by a few months.

    You may be in trouble especially if you were fired. Then is looks like you were
    trying to hide something. Sometimes you are better off telling the truth.

    There is a company that most big companies use to verify employment information. I can't remember the name of the company but call Pfizer and ask to verify employment and they will give you the name of the company. It is automated and will give your start or finish date and also position title. I think you are in trouble.

    This is a typical Pre-Employement Background Check with Employment Verification. It takes 2 days.

    Level 1 - Pre Employment Screening Background Check

    * Verifies your Applicant’s Identity
    * Verifies Social Security Number
    * Verifies Address history and reports 30-year search results
    * Counties of residence history, which is important for criminal records check
    * Criminal records background check in applicant’s state of residence.
    * Criminal records background check in county of residence if statewide information is not available
    * Verifies Education
    * Verifies Employment history for three employers
    * Sexual Offender database search
    * Terrorist watch database search
    * Bankruptcy search
    * Tax lien search
    * 24 hour access to your Background Check Pre Employment Screening Report
    * Report posted on a secure web page in two business days.
    * Continued support with free consultation by telephone or email about your Pre Employment Screening Report.
    * Guaranteed Satisfaction with Pre Employment Screening or no charge

    View Sample Report

    Level 2 - Pre Employment Screening Background Check

    Level 2 includes and exceeds Level 1 Report with the following enhancements:

    * Federal Criminal Record background check is included in Level 2.
    * Criminal Record background check is expanded to cover all states and counties listed in your Applicant’s address history.
    * Civil Records Search is included.
    * Driving Violations over previous three year are included..
    * Verify Employment history for 4 employers (increased from 3).
    * Verify Professional Licenses for all licenses and certifications listed by your Applicant.
    * Corporate Ownership and Officer Search to reveal if your applicant owns a corporation or is a corporate officer..
    * Level 2 Report will be posted on a secure web page in three business days to allow time for enhanced search

    It is free to check to see if you own name shows up in a search by name. I think it costs something to run the actual background check and get the report about what it says.

    Employment verification is usually done by contacting the companies that you listed on you job application. The info is limited by what your previous employer is willing to say. Often they only give out start and finish work dates, and maybe job title. When they give out more information, some companies have been sued ex-employees who alleged that the company misstated the facts.

    I hope you get the chance to explain that you were just a little off on your dates. I've got my fingers crossed for you!

    I've often wondered, can they ever find out if someone has been terminated? Are they allowed to ask that, or if you are eligible for rehire?

    It is against the law to deny someone employment bc of bankruptcy.

    Accuracy of employment dates is far more important than gaps in employment. However, you should be ok if you are within a 3 month or less variance. In today's economy gaps in employment have become more acceptable.

    Anytime there is a discrepancy on the dates of hires from other emplyment, you are at risk. that is one bit of information that is willingly provided. I could find out about gaps of employment by asking several questions about why the individual left. I have to be honest, if a candidate had too many errors on their dates of employment, I passed on them. On the other hand, if they were honest and told me exactly what happened, I did not exempt them from being hired.

    I am old school in that being upfront will always be the best way to go. If I had to "discover" a significant error" that pretty much knocked that individual out of the running. I hope it works out for you.

    Sorry if this was covered previously in the thread. Does a background check identify criminal activity for a 'minor'? I was caught shoplifting as a 16 year old. Had to go appear before the district justice, was fingerprinted at the police station etc. Just wondering if a standard background check will pick this up. I am 40 years old now.

    Anyone?

    I suspect that has not carried over to your background check. The fact you were a minor and it was a minor charge would make it doubtful (unless you were applyiong for a banking job or handling money for an institution and then I really don't know).

    Wow. This is quite helpful. I lead a pretty unexciting life, but I have always wondered what they looked for in those checks outside of driving record and drugs. Its too bad this reply was posted in 2007. I'd love to know what determines whether a job candidate gets a level 1 or a level 2 background check!

    It's rumored that tax returns are used to verify your employment and whether or not you collected unemployment and this is simply not true. Tax returns are between the tax payer and the IRS. If Mitt Romney ran for President and kept his returns private, rest assured no pharma company will get their hands on any of ours.

    Employers in pharma generally use the employment history provided by the applicant and then work to verify that the information provided is accurate. You will only have problems if the people they contact disagree with the version of history you have provided.

    Would it be ok to stretch an ending date of employment [say for example] from
    02/07/2007 (which is mid-week) to instead 12/07/2007 (which is on a Friday) to cover up a long gap of unemployment between February and December of 2007 ? Is it risky to do this?

    You can check your own background by contacting The Work Number. You can see exactly what the potential employer will see, including a detailed salary history. It is worth doing.
