Let’s be honest. No rep is going to rock the boat by calling HR and telling them they are being directed to promote their products off label. If they do they will also be investigated by HR and more than likely fired or forced to quit. The job prospects post pharma are grim to say the least. You will take a minimum of a 50% pay cut and work twice the hours you are now. I know ex-Pharma Reps that were out of work for well over a year and when they did finally find a job it was well beneath their qualifications. We have families to feed and bills to pay so we grin and bear it each week counting down the days until we can finally retire fat and happy compliments of Papa Pharma.

It shouldn't matter if a rep could lose his job. A rep has to be ethical and do the right thing. A job is a privilege, not a right. It is the rep's responsibility to report malfeasance to corporate. If the report is made in good faith, the rep has nothing to worry about. Doing wrong hurts more.

    Famous last words.
Is your wife hot? I wonder how fast she will leave you when you are waiting tables at Outback.

I once had a DM who was all over me to say false things about our drug and compare it to the competitor making false claims. We had so many discussions time after time about why I would not say these things as I would loose credibility and respect of docs. The information he wanted me to say about another drug was well known to the contrary of what he wanted me to say. I remember once before a lunch I was crying in the car after he badgered me to lie to the office during lunch and I stood my ground. I told him we would make up a story about allergies because my eyes were so red.

So, I went to all the medical studies I could find about the other drug and copied them and highlighted the lessened side effect profile. And our drug with the bleeding profile.....Our drug had a much higher bleeding profile and the competition actually had a much lessor bleeding profile. It was common knowledge among docs. Anyway, I sent a very large cardboard box of highlighted studies with notes to my DM's home showing him why I could not follow his insistence in making false claims. I had had it. He backed off, and my business was good so it was okay. We were both severed soon after in a buy out but I'm sure that would have come back to bite me............ he would have retaliated no doubt.

Wow, thanks for sharing. I could have easily written your response as I went through almost exactly same thing. I also refused to give in and promote a fictitious safety profile and also lie about my competitor’s efficacy. At the end of the day it is my credibly at stake and I would not be bullied by an over aggressive DM. In my case however it did come back and bite me as I was let go and five years later he is still hard at work deceiving physicians into making poor choices for their patients.

Yes, this guy was / is the nicest man, until we were bought out by Merck........he then became a monster......prior with the smaller company he was very reasonable and nice.

Once again I agree with you. My DM was/is a good family man who simply got in too deep and has to play ball or else find himself in the unemployment line.

Sad but true. I'm in the same situation now with a monster DM who at heart is probably a nice guy. Company is killing him and shit rolls downhill. Is there any reasonable place to work in Pharma? Mid size privately held now.........horrible and wink wink nod nod attitude for compliance..........you could do this but I didn't tell you...........you could say this but don't put it in an email, I won't back you up if anyone calls you on it.........you know the drill.

If an honest place to work still exists in Pharma I have not found it yet. Some Biotech’s entire business model might be to develop a few new drugs in hopes that they WILL be bought out by a Major Company so they can cash in. I imagine very few of the investors who put up the capital for these start-ups actually care whether or not the drug is needed or even works so long as they get paid in the end.

Wow, seems like my script as my manager let me go in front of her manager in the hotel room. She was sweating bullets hoping that I would not call her on her misdirectives and insider information that got ME canned. I was just ready to go and waiting for my call so I let it go, gave her and her manager a hug goodbye and wished them the best in the game called pharma. How I was severed is upsetting. But, knowing the charade was over was a relief. That was 6 yrs ago. I do miss selling and would return to selling. But, not for pharma.

Old AZ rep? Canned for putting a reference to Jupiter in your call notes even though that was the direction you were given by everyone from your DSM to the RSD? I know several people who were let go in this fashion and it sickens me still because the those managers are still working.

Nope, not AZ..but shame my story is the story of many. Ironic? Unfortunately, now. It's a business mode to eliminate high performers and reset the bonus model for the region. #statusquo

...It is VERY sick. I did get to run into that manager a year later. I let her have it, with a smile. After all, these companies are requiring us to live in close proximity to our territories and managers-so we're neighbors, yes! My life had reset and quite a few good things had happened for me by then. We were in a public place, so all was good. It was very, very cathartic to come F2F and see the guilt and receive her remorse.

REally, you think she feels guilt or shame. These DMs check that at the door.

It really doesn't matter. I had my day. I saw the nervousness and the playing field had tilted. #imgood #imout

Unfortunately she is still out there driving reps to deceive physicians and endangering the lives of patients. The question is do you care enough to do something about it?

Or better yet call the DOJ and stop EVERY MGR. in the company who you know is doing the exact same thing.

Wrong. I did it, and don't regret it. Either you have integrity or you don't. There's no reason for compliance if you're not being ethical and not reporting those who direct you to do otherwise.

This is not good behavior from your HR. I hope you got the new job very soon.
