Several of the old ALZA folks have started up a privately held company called Jazz Pharmaceuticals. I think Sam Sachs, Bob Myers and Carol Gamble are there. I wonder how they will do?

    Jazz just purchased Orphan Pharma.

Sala was my mentor. Brought me in from knowing nothing to understanding pharma, people and how to make $$$$. He LISTENED unless you were lazy and then he crucified you. I never had a boss that I wanted to work for as much as him.

See, some of you are remembering the ALZA post Vivus and Baker Norton. A previous post listed the ORIGINAL ALZA - No george in Portland. That was Sala's realm.

Believe me, the early days were the times worth mentioning. Once the other companies were acquired, life changed and good people left.

Totally right on that. That was a REALLY fun time. The money was OK, but the fun was the whole atmosphere of comraderie. You really did feel that "we were all in it together." The people running it were very cool, from Butler on down. Everyone else says that, but at ALZA at the beginning it was true. Somewhere out there, there must be a couple of the originals plotting creation of a new company or sales force! If so, PLEASE POST HERE!!!

Alza didn't have a "bitch board" a.k.a. Cafe Pharma board until OMP destroyed the company.
    I miss those days.

Alas, it has been 10 years - yes 10 years since ALZA started - toward te end of '93 and the beginning of '94. Hard to imagine any new company matchng those early days. I tell stories about Testoderm - the hair dryers and all. Telling docs to ave patients shave their scrotum! People can't believe what we did. But it was fun.

Joe Fernandez is my current DM with a pharma company called Altana. He is wonderful and has many great stories about the Alza days...He has nothing but good things to say about the place and the people. He has great attributes as a manager that were probably ingrained due to his days at Alza...

Was SS in Omaha as much of a loser with Alza as he is today? Totally useless and double dipping.
