Can you say Micromanaged? Run to the nearest exit!!! Or, as an alternative, you can get off CF at 10 in the morning and go to work! My God man, haven't you heard of IPN protocols? Not only do they know where you are, they can track your use on your computer...they've probably already know where you've been and what you're looking at! Don't worry about when I'm on - I work for myself!

This is becoming more and more common. Other ways companies can track what you are doing besides cell phones, and VPN's is if you have a company provided gas card, and/or company car combo. The administrator of the car/gas card provides reports to your company concerning, where you purchased the gas, what time you purchased gas, how many miles you drove between getting gas, etc. If the company owns a fleet of say Chevy Impalas, they know how much gas each one holds, and the MPG. They see a purchase for 16 gallons of gas, and the Impala holds 12, a big red flag goes up. Some fucking dweeb at HQ sends an email to the sales manager. All as part of the service the company auto administrator provides to your dental/pharma/medical company. You need to be careful out there. You need to be smarter than they are. Its always best to have your own car if possible-as a back up, and ALWAYS, ALWAYS ALWAYS have your own laptop. Never use the company laptop for anything other than work BS.
As far as cell phones, the major cell phone companies provide corporate clients with reports that indicate when a call was made, where was it made from, to whom, what time and how long. If you make 11 AM calls every day near or from your home, they will know. Not a good idea. If you need to do something not work related, i.e. out of your territory, shut the phone off for a few hours, and if anyone questions it, the battery went dead. The companies are being sold sales "productivity" suites from various sources, all designed to make sure you are doing what you say you are doing. They play their games, we play our games. Don't get caught in this trap.

THANK YOU AND THANK YOU! This information is all correct and if you don't believe it then you are naive. However, 95% of the information is simply too much information and no one ever really follows it or follows up with it. It is generally used to provide documentation if a rep is on the cusp of being let go. If a rep is producing at 100%, near 100% or over 100% this information just becomes a "light hearted joke" in a conversation, ie, " Can you imagine that someone turned in a gas receipt for 16 gallons when our company cars only hold 12 gallons, wow that is stupid." Great post that doesn't dog anyone personally but does provide insight into the reality of management. It's no big deal if you are constantly doing the right thing, and if you aren't; then you get what you get!

PP here. I have to disagree slightly with you. I think it is in everyone's best interest to maintain an image, and perception that you are always doing the right thing in regard to company expenses/car/computer. I don't think it benefits you by not keeping the company perception of you on the up and up. Sure if you are at 100% and you bend some of the gas or phone or tracking rules, you are probably OK. BUT, why not be at 100% AND have the company think you are not bending the rules? If an opening for a promotion comes up, and you are the one being considered, this information could be the deciding factor, particularly if the competing candidate IS bending the rules a little and the company knows he is, and is at 100% of goal. I am not a sales manager trying to scare anyone into not bending the rules. Instead I am a believer in the the concept of "perception is reality", especially in the corporate world. Everyone needs to keep management's perception of them in a positive light. Make management believe, and the numbers show, that you are getting things done out in the field-the perception. In reality though, you could be waking up at 10AM, are out drinking and partying until 2AM, and spend Fridays at the beach (reality) - no problem if the company believes and it looks like you are the hardest worker on the sales team. This is part of working smart and having some corporate savvy. The most important thing is the perception. Its your image, your personal brand. That is what needs to be maintained. I'm not saying don't play with the rules, just do it in a way that is not obvious.

i don't believe that anyone expects you to be making calls until 5PM om Friday. If it can't get done by 1PM it isn't happenning. Friday afternoon should be used for expense reports, weekly reports and an occassional afternoon surgical assist. 5 PM should be family time.

I have an idea. Instead of all your worrying and the bullshit lies to your employer, you know, the one that feeds your rotten family, gives you healthcare coverage, etc. Why don't you pukes just do the job you are hired and paid to do/ Pussies.

It's not about just "doing your job". It's an invasion of privacy that at any time your boss or someone else in your company can check where you are at.

And no one who works in outside sales in working from 9-5 everyday. All it takes is that one time you knock off early or sleep in late for them to can you.

Yes, it is an invasion. Then you find out your being tracked 24 hours a day 7 days a week! IT'S WRONG!

What about the scenario of having a high performing sales rep who is constantly tracked and at some point some jerk off manager decides that the superstar salesman should be driving around more and spending more time on the phone. Should the superstar sales rep who meets his numbers every month be shit canned? Would that be a good use of the GPS tracker?

Creepy were it true, it's not. Have they ever? Yes. On everyone? No. Do they now? Don't think so, software that did so in all phones is inoperable. Easy with the bitter hyperbole.
