Amen. Only thing on this board that makes any sense.

Cutting extraneous sites made sense as I explained before. So Verona, Poznan, Evreux all made more sense closing than cutting the equivalent numbers at a major site like Ware, Stevenage, RTP or UM/UP. Tonbridge, the Frythe, Beckenham also all fell or fall into that category.

IPD-US was an obvious cut which was not made. Also some people were demoted rather than cut - a Director and a Team Leader were both moved back to their old roles. People know who they are.

"Yes some C band staff got cut ... not enough as there were other areas that could have gone."

I got the impression you had more suggestions beyond the cuts already made.

Well, I do have to admit that this is the first time I've ever seen group leaders / VPs / directors being cut to such an extent. While I'm glad some real action was taken to eliminate non-producing positions, the more the new organisation comes into focus the uglier it looks. I know its easy to be negative - but this new arrangement in product development is pretty damn confusing. Yes cutting some mgrs was good. But did we have to make a massive & confusing re-org to achieve that goal?

Also, nearly every exChemDev person I met with this week is fully expecting that the so-called Lost Tribe of the North Building is toast. The new instant buzz word of our freshly minted department is 'outsourcing' and it is generally expected that synthetic chemistry is the first target. This whole re-org / lay-off has been a sustained release ordeal. Those who think UM/UP/RTP dodged big cuts are assuming the cutting is done. Tea leaves say otherwise. But we may as well enjoy the Indian Summer while we can.

Ok you wanted cost cutting ideas. The whole grade inflation thing where D1's moved inexplicably to C5 (with the pay rise, the bonus increase, the extra vacation and the stock options - all adding $10K plus). Cost cutting isn`t always about cutting staff but managing costs such as these.
I thought IPD-RTP should have gone - not project centred. The demoted Director and Team Leader should have been eliminated rather than retained (another $500K saved). Real money.

Regarding the philosophy of the reorg. I can see why some complain (I did) when two groups (CD and PD) get turned into TWO groups (PD and IMS). But I can see the logic of one group being in charge of the pilot plants and logistics, rather than spreading this over two groups. Also having API and DP under one management team is also a good idea if properly executed. No-one ever thought of a combined team having synthetic chemists, formulators, analysts. So we were always going to have API and DP groups within the new PD and why not.

As for the comment that someone made that RTP must be in trouble because none of the PD exec is in RTP, well CM (from EDS) is based in RTP. For what that matters. Again just relaying facts.

I am glad you admit that you were pleasantly surprised by the cuts to management rather than "normal" staff. Shows all the pessimism in the earlier part of this year was over done.

glad there were no big lay offs in RTP (check)

glad there were some mid/high level mgt lay offs (check)

completely baffled by new org, no obvious rationale for it

the early group is saddled with an incredible array of responsibilities with a fairly small number of people (only rationale I've heard for structure of early group is that it has been structured to facilitate a spin-off, I'll make no comment about the plausibility of that scenario, but I've heard no better explanation for the way early group is setup)

the middle groups look like business as usual, essentially still have separate CD & PD groups - if anything it looks more complicated than before - no obvious advantage to that arrangement at all

the late group has been dubbed "2nd generation" Is that some lame attempt to re-brand line extensions as something new? Also, I don't follow the logic of combining CD & PD in the 2ndGen group

so from my perspective I see no obvious advantage to the new structure and I think the folks in the early group should be nervous (and I've heard that they are)

Actually, I heard that Infectious Diseases in Pennsylvania got hot pretty hard. Not a big layoff in terms of numbers but over 50% was cut.

If they really want to make up some cash, sell those knuckleheads in Stieffel. What a drag on profits they are. Maybe it's Andrew's ace in the hole to raise cash fast if things go south. I think that Stieffel is worth about $100 and a couple of bus tokens.

    You're out of touch.

Stieffel is the hot property now.

We looking at every old product to see if we can make money by smearing on the skin.

    Hope it pans out.

I thought we sold the Verona site??

Regarding the Verona site, it was the R&D parts of the site that were shut down.

I thought this whole thread was R&D related hence my observation. Even so the Verona sites have been around for quite a while so it's not like something new has been bought recently, unless someone knows something else??

Big cuts in oncology chemistry at UP coming soon. Heard it from a finance guy who is in the know. Look out Collegeville.
