When does Prevacid go generic? It sounds like it will be made into a OTC like Prilosec and pushed by Novartis? What have you heard about the succesor to Prevacid. I read that it is very similar in molecular structure to Prevacid aka Prilosec to Nexium.

Where have you been the last 3 years?? We have only been bombarded with press releases on this for years. You must not work for TAP or in the PPI marketplace. OTC Prevacid will hit late 09 right after generic hits summer 09. As far as the Prilosec-Nexium compound we have, I can't comment on. There is another PPI in the works, that is no secret at TAP and in fact phase 3 stuies have been mentioned in certain journals. Don't take my word for it though, or anyone that posts on this site, go and research this yourself. You will be able to google most of the press releases to find the answer you are looking for.

Prevacid has another 9 yrs left on its patent. Relax and go ask your doctor for another refill.

Someday there will be otc versions of these great drugs however the technology just isn't here yet.

it has nothing to do with technology. it has to do w/ the patient. until the patient is up for the brand name they cannot make a generic. This happened recently with oxycontin. they jumped the gun on the generic, to the point where it was in pharmacies and people were perscribed it. Quite a scandel. Anyway, by all accounts it looks like the PPI (proton pump inhibitors) will be all in their generic forms by 2011!

I think you mean "patent", and the last PPI to go generic will be Nexium in 2014
