What should I do?

Years ago, my manager took a sales report of mine and accidentally left his copy with me. The problem is that on the back of his was, in his own handwriting--which is very identifiable, some VERY embarrassing information about how he was supplementing his income along with the regional manager. He is still very active in pharma and I just found out that, for some reason, he has given me a bad reference. I have not given him as a reference until now because I worked for him in a specific area of pharma, which was also the field for the job that I was applying to. He has no reason to give me a bad reference as I was a multiple award winner in his district. He has to know that it was me that has the document that I referred to earlier in this post. Oh, one other fact--this happened YEARS ago. What should I do?

    Probably not much.

But this says something about using services that actually check references and what they will say about you .... there are some firms who will pose as potential employers for you and contact previous supervisors and such to get their actual references.

And, of course, since you have left that employer, you should probably return that company document. Perhaps send it to the compliance officer or CEO, via overnight mail with signature confirmation. Keep a copy for your files to insure it gets delivered.

Yes, thank you Mr. Manager. I certainly wasn't asking for advice from a manager. And yes, I will certainly get right on returning all of the documents I ever had from over 10 years of pharma. sales. Do you think FedEx or UPS will give me the best bulk rate? BTW, none of the companies ever asked for the sales reports back--didn't realize that sales reports available to every rep were proprietary property. Gotta go so I can start addressing the boxes.

Seriously, I was suggesting sending the incriminating report back to the home office and maybe some person with a conscience would act on it.

But on second thought, I doubt if there is anyone with a conscience in most of corporate America's home offices today.

Do what is best for you to get the positive references and move on.

Sorry if I came across with a corporate-kiss-ass mentality. Wasn't meant to be that way.

Do you have a name or website link? I would like to find out what past employers and my references are saying about me so that if needed, I can pick the ones that give me the best reference.

Send copies of his scheme and his writing, with a brief outline of how you got it. Remain anon. Send copies to his current company's HR, legal compliance, CEO and entire board of directors, especially the chair of the board's audit committee.
