I SAID CAN YOU HEAR ME!

I learned something disturbing when I failed my hearing test.

The green Max Lite earplugs supplied to us in Austin, Tx. are designed for small ear canals.

From the Howard Leight website product description: Ideal size for workers with smaller ear canals. NRR (Noise Reduction Rating) is 30. (Many complained when these replaced the NRR33 (orange) earplugs.) The size difference is easily seen in a side-by-side comparison to any other standard earplugs. The difference between NRR30 and NRR33 is HUGE.

If you don't have small ears, these green earplugs will not fit properly. Proper fit is crucial.
OSHA standards consider the actual effectiveness of earplugs is half of the NRR rating claimed by manufacturers using perfect lab conditions to achieve maximum NRR ratings. So, IF your plugs do fit they are most likely STILL only half-way effective. How effective CAN they be if they are DESIGNED for SMALL EARS and most of us NEED a standard size just to be half-way effective?

After shutdown last year my work area was noticeably quieter. Nine months later it is much, much louder. Point is, the posted test results for work area noise levels are typically inaccurate and out of date.

Other hearing protectors Hospira offers do not solve this problem. Earmuffs alone are torture devices. Earmuffs over REQUIRED safety glasses are, of course, much worse.
Other alternative earplugs have even lower NRR ratings.

To actually protect your hearing I suggest buying your own earplugs that have a NRR33
    rating, and insert them properly.

PS: In 30+ years no one has succeeded in proving their hearing loss was caused by working at Abbott/Hospira in Austin. Even if your hearing is damaged on the job you will lose if you claim that fact.
    You HAVE TO PROTECT YOURSELF!

Go see Safety or Employee Health, I believe they have alternate earplugs. There's also an ear plug in the stockroom that's corded, comes with a case and is completely different than the green ear plugs.

I'm aware of the alternatives available from Hospira.

Alternatives are not NRR33, which is MUCH more effective noise reduction.

The alternatives ratings are lower or same ratings as the green ear plugs
that are designed for small ear canals, but they might still be better
than the small green ones because the alternatives are adult sizes.

My posts are meant to inform people that these too small earplugs are exposing
Hospira employees to preventable hearing loss. If they are too small,
that prevents them from providing anything near their NRR30 rating.
Proper fit and proper insertion are what makes earplugs effective.

Earmuffs alone are painfully tight. Earmuffs over required safety glasses
become a torture device. I tried them.

I will no longer use less than maximum noise reduction NRR33.

The Max Lite NRR30 is for people with small ear canals, but it is the only
earplug most people are using since it is the only earplug stocked at the
entrances to areas that require hearing protection.

If...if-f-f NRR30 is adequate protection, it MUST FIT.

If...f-f-f Hospira takes hearing protection seriously,
they should stock adult size NRR33 earplugs at all
areas that require hearing protection. Anything less
is a gamble with production employees' hearing.

I want people to be aware of this situation.
It is easy to ignore or dismiss.

    Take care of yourself.

    Bonne chance!
    (pardon my French)
