Seeking some honest feedback. Talking to a recruiter about an energy position. Says total comp first year should be 120K-150K uncapped. Currently making 115K in b2b sales so this sounds like a step up. Thoughts? Don't wanna make a poor choice as I have a family. Thanks!

Don't go for it. With new comp plan and unattainable quotas, you would be more in the 70-90k range unless you turn into a top 15% rep for the division. Do your family a favor and stay where you are at.

Thunderbeat is dead in the water. The dog has been out since 2012 with minimal disruption to the other competitors.

I wouldn't necessarily tell you to not take it, but I would tell you to carefully research the opportunity. What's the territory doing in sales currently and what did it do last year? Get a clear understanding of the new comp plan and calculate a conservative estimate of what you'd make year 1 with the new comp changes. Lastly thunderbeat is a challenging sell but a solid product. If you get a decent territory you may be able to do well and jump ship in a year to a better opportunity. Good luck.

Pretty sound advice. I'll add that I've been in energy since our Gyrus days and have seen many changes. But I still enjoy it and make good $. Sorry to disappoint the naysayers. :)

    Fuck Olympus!
They just had us in a convention center with shit food for 5 days
    Constantly droning on about energy
Market share. We were way to late to Market!
    Covidien has it locked!
    Olympus is a shithole!

    Does anyone still use Gyrus?

I'm a URO rep and when I sell bipolar I make sure to sell the Gyrus and not the Thunderbeat. Thunderbeat is garbage. Still has the initiation/firing delay.

Hey there "URO rep" - assuming you actually work for Olympus - Thunderbeat is outstanding - IF (Big If) - you know how to properly explain the nuances of the device to the surgeon and correctly program the generator BEFORE the case. So the "initiation/firing" delay (nice wording by the way) is a strong indication that neither you nor your energy rep have a clue on how to sell the Thunderbeat system.

Furthermore if you are recommending the Gyrus over the Thunderbeat system in the Urology space for bipolar - you are severely limited in your sales and/or thinking abilities. Thank God you're not my Urology rep.

Yes, it is outstanding. It has really taken off in the market. It's been out for three years and you have Ethicon and Covidien running scared. You might be at 5% market share after three years. In another 20 years, you may be up to 20%.

Actually, ethicon and covidien are running scared - well, in my territory anyway. I never said it had the market by the balls - I said it was an outstanding device - because it is. Olympus failing to do their due diligence and secure gpo contracts is the reason for poor market share - not its clinical capabilities.

So what you are saying is that you need a contract to help you sell an "outstanding device".

So what you are saying is that you don't understand how hospitals are operating these days? Something being better doesn't trump a contract in many cases.

    Fucking idiot.

Exactly. I couldn't have said it better.

Obviously you don't understand what it takes to sell. Ethicon and Covidien have made a living off of list price products/off contract items because of the clinical demand.

Olympus on the other hand has to rely on contracts to get their "outstanding" device into accounts.

Either your product isn't that great or the surgeons don't feel it is that much better than what they are using.

I've seen trials of it in my area and it has failed miserably.

Be honest, it has been out three years and it's a bomb. Stop drinking the kool aid.

Or you can keep complaining to your manager and your peers that Thunderbeat would be on the shelf if only those darn GPOs would work with us.

Honestly dude, you seriously are an idiot if you think contracts do not play a major factor in the overall success of a new product - entering a space in which the company - did not already have a presence.

Then you mention products (very few) being sold off contract by Ethicon and Covidien - when the vast majority of their products are indeed on contract and well entrenched in hospitals. They don't "sell shyt" - they fight the contract battle.

So if contracts are as insignificant as you claim, why the phuck does Covidien and Ethicon have the vast majority of their products on gpos and spend millions in order to do so?

Can you sell a product off contract? Absolutely. My territory does a million in thunderbeat sales and I know several reps that do above and just slightly below a mil. But on a national level - with no contracts - get the phuck out of here.

Then again - all you mentioned from the very beginning was the clinical aspect - when hospitals are governed by in large - by admin/materials management - which dictates what doctors will use - or else I'd have nearly 2 million in thunderbeat sales.

I personally love the whining from the Olympus reps about your device. It came out and all I heard from my local Olympus reps was how it was going to take over the space. It would put Ligasure and Harmonic out of the market. Here we are three years later and you guys still can't gain any significant marketshare. Ligasure and Harmonic are still eating your lunch. So go ahead, blame the GPOs. You are a third rate player in this space and always will be a third rate player. Keep trying to throw in your generators for your OR equipment bundles because that is the only way you can get them into the hospitals.

One of these two players will come out with a combo device before you can gain any traction or GPO acceptance.
