Judge Doyle Square is one of the largest projects in Madison’s history, yet it is being rushed through City Hall in a secretive and often confusing way.

Lost in the fantasy talk about Judge Doyle Square is the potential cost to the city of hundreds of dollars per household to benefit two private companies.

The mayor proposes to give $12 million to biotechnology firm Exact Sciences, which is touting a single product that has never earned a profit, losing about a half-billion dollars in the last three years. In a filing with the Securities and Exchange Commission, the firm acknowledges a competing product could win approval by the FDA, making its ColoGuard noninvasive screening test for colon cancer “obsolete.”

The mayor and other city officials would give $12 million in cash and millions in land and parking to a highly speculative firm, whose stock lost a third of its value in the last two months.

Exact Sciences is a medical manufacturing and marketing firm, leasing its patent from the Mayo Clinic. It’s hardly a “hub of biotech.” The deal mostly just moves 300 jobs from University Research Park to Downtown. For $12 million in taxpayers’ dollars, it might add 100 additional employees.

In addition to the $12 million from the city, the company has received $9 million in tax credits from the state’s checkered Wisconsin Economic Development Corp. to create jobs and make capital investments.

Even with its huge losses, Exact Sciences paid a total of $5 million in compensation to its two top employees in 2014. It can pay for the move itself. But if the city is offering to pay, why not take it?

I need you all to make a United Way donation even though I have millions of stock shares. It will look good if we donate to charity. #winkwink

We are tracking every rep who doesn't donate. We need 100% participation. Let's discuss your bonus later

First of all thats highly illegal to force people to donate and post rankings to intimidate people into donating so if you dont , like in northeast- the poor AMs will get treated like crap if their teams dont make 100% compliance rates for their boss..they are under pressure too..wish they would stand up.. Certain RSDs are out of control and have no clue.. They hide behind a title and rule by intimidation- dangerous.. where the hell are the lawyers?? They are not afraid of getting sued apparently.. After the first suit Im sure they will drop the cockiness and some of these god awful leaders..

Another thing- we are a cancer screening company!! Why the heck are the donations slammed down our throat for united way, if I dont donate it gets highlighted in my team- fine upper mgt you politically donate, not UW fan! as a company why are we not involved in more cancer charity events, or donating to the colon cancer alliance or ACS?!!! I would be more apt to give $$ for cancer! Ask for voluntary donations or stop there because you arent paying us enough to force us...

The United Way thing really rubbed me the wrong way. Bullied us into donating with many emails a week and indicating they knew who had already donated, etc. How dare you tell your employees how to give. You guys should be ashamed. 2016...new job hunt!

The United Way campaign was one thing-but to keep track of who donates and who doesn't? It doesn't benefit me or "the mission of Exact Sciences". Isn't this a cancer screening company?

The United Way thing is dumb. If you are broke, it's your fault. Everyone has the same opportunity in America to make it.
