I think San Diego is easier for a newbie than Beverly Hills. It takes 6 months to even BEGIN to build relationships in BH and Hollywood.

San Diego is a BREEZE compared to LA and Northern CA for someone just starting out.

If you have a book of business already ... then, every area is about the same

    That's my 2 cents.

Orange County has less traffic and is more friendly than STUCK UP Beverly Hills and Hollywood.

In northern CA, Fremont is 99 percent no see.

This is very timely ... I'm moving to the Sacramento area and wondered how the territories are commonly divided up. Do the Sacramento reps call on Roseville, Rocklin, Lincoln, Yuba City, Marysville, etc.? Or is that a different territory typically? I've seen some "Sacramento West" geographies that look like they also include San Francisco? Trying to get a feel for the area and find out what access is like in those areas.

Sutter is closed as are most of the major clinics. UC Davis system too. You can make it but it is getter harder every year.

It really depends on what you are selling. Not all pharma is alike, contrary to popular opinion. If you are selling diagnostics, DME and such, you may get different responses. The key is to find out whom you can speak with, make an appointment-do not try to just show up. This really will piss them off. A literature drop in a targeted dept. is fine. I have been into both Sutter and UCD and its all about following proper channels, being persistent, not pushy. Sometimes, if you all you get is to drop off your literature, then you have to be strategic and find out who your target is. For me, it was the head of a particular dept at UCD. I was able to meet with him, then finally get a speaker in and provide a lunch to entire dept. So, there is always hope, but again, it is strongly dep. on what you are selling, as much as how well you network around that organization. If you call on someone in the community, who is likely to associate with another key person at Sutter or UCD, you can ask them to help you or for suggestions. This works well for me.

"If you are selling diagnostic ", diagnostic is NOT pharma!

The AP is still correct, as it applies to pharma, so chill bubba.

Watch out for jerks who want to "give" you part of their territory. Some will dump areas like Fremont on you, cause they know no one can get in front of docs there. Be sure you choose, rather than accept. Be very assertive and strategic, as managers more often than not, will take a rep they like and their word and don't really know Shit about territorial differences. Beware new hires who may have a relationship with your manager, you aren't aware of. You might end up getting screwed big time

I can vouch for that last post. Yup, I was hired and told I'd have such and such type a vehicle. I got it, drove it to first reg. meeting and another rep there was jealous I got a newer car. He then talked mger into giving him my car and I got the dregs. That was the first time I got screwed as a new hire. Thankfully, the mger made up for it in other ways, because he was one of a kind straight up decent man and to this day, I've never met any manager who could come close.

last pharma jewel of a mger I had was a real prick. He ran off every hire he made, because he simply refused to communicate. That's right, makin a 6 fig income for the first time in his pathetic life and he would not return calls at all or if he did, it was after you got pissed off. Further, he told no one one his strategies, mostly because he didn't have one. He was a full on lazy assed head case if there ever was one. Came of initially like Mr. Nice guy and aren't I so humble and fair. In the end, the a hole made one more hire before a new mger was to take over our territory. Mind you, he did not tell us this was going to happen, nor did ANYONE tell us we would be giving up accounts to new hires. You heard me right, I showed up to several out of town, long distance accounts and found out another rep had been hire IN MY TERRITORY and had already called on my accounts. My accounts were appalled and felt so bad for me, they actually said they would go in on a lawsuit against my employer for doing this to me. Also, the a hole mger who was getting his ass promo'd out of mgmt. into another position (clearly he could NOT manage his way out of a paper bag) hired a fraternity brother friend of his and the guy was as big a a hole as our old mger. Did nothing, carried zero literature with him, didn't show up for joint presentations/dinners and yet, mger boy frat buddy gave him credit and got him promo'd. That's right, all while we watched our hard won accounts get HANDED over to new hires, without so much as even informing us we even had new co-workers, let alone another new mger coming on, that had already started with the company. So, beware, be careful and don't ever be afraid of walking away and off a job. You get treated like shit, you give it back to them standing up on the toilet with you pants down. these corporations will chew you up and spit in your face, so they deserve to get it back ten fold. I will never be the same from this experience and will always distrust sales people and certainly sales managers. I opted to get out for good. It was inexcusably the most awful mind f8@#*&@! a person could ever get.

Santa Rosa, Fremont and Sacramento are as bad as it gets. Smart ass snark docs who seem to think we are peddlers in a East Indian Bazar and can be best used for free meals and kicking around. That being said, I was shocked by 4 docs who treated me well and didn't expect me to do any professional ass kissing or catering to their staffs dietary and gluttony needs.
