We just checked with our local chain pharmacy. The cost for one month’s supply (30 days) of brand name Wellbutrin XL 300 was $1,836. Yup, you read that right. That means each pill costs over $60. Put another way, a year’s supply of brand-name Wellbutrin XL 300 could cost a depressed patient over $20,000.

The original developer of Wellbutrin was Burroughs Wellcome. When that company was acquired, the drug became the property of GlaxoSmith Kline, now known as GSK. More recently, the drug was acquired by Valeant, a Canadian drug company.

We checked with PharmacyChecker.com. This organization compares prices. They say that Canadian pharmacies charge roughly between $1.30 and $2.19 per pill for the branded version of Wellbutrin XL 300. [$ 720 a year Canadian versus $ 20,000 American]

Valeant is a Canadian company. US healthcare system is corrupt, so it has been easy to overcharge the government. Go with generics.

    Does that make sense yet?

All pharmas are out to maximize profit to appease shareholders. There are formulas to price drugs so that there is enough demand to support a price, given the efficacy of the drug. So, if it's the new drug that treats depression, then they will price it much higher than something that doesn't work as well. There's also a patent time limit, then generics will hit the market.

In the US, price isn't regulated, so customers and doctors just need to determine if the cost justifies the means. The U.S. market may subsidize the neighbors to the north.

Ask PBMs why drugs are priced so high. Ask them what type of discounts they seek to allow these drugs on their formularies and if they pass these discounts to the customers or to THEIR shareholders and CEOs who btw make way more than some pharma CEOs. Get with the program... Stay tuned to future articles on PBMs and their influence on medicine are your doctor's giving you care or is it these PBMs that determine the kind of care u get...

Same old LIES AND BS Pharma has always pushed as excuses for their outrageous prices. The only thing pharma cares about is greed and lining pockets of execs! While trying to divert responsibility onto PBMs, all insurance companies are reprehensible too! They've never been held accountable and have never been part of the equation in fixing health care due to their lobbies on both sides of the aisle. But, while they screw over the public with rationing health care and maxing profit, they certainly "DON'T RAISE THE DRUG PRICES! They want to keep the prices DOWN to pay out less! So, blaming PBMs is more PHARMA BS. Pharma used to use the smoke and mirrors bs of needing to max pricing to pay for R&D but that isn't happening, they only buy up small companies with new compounds. They do NOTHING of value. We need a one payer, gov program. For those who've been duped by the big pharma that it doesn't work or it's worse in Canada, that's big pharma at work pushing more lies on stupid, gullible public. CLOSE SCUM like Valeant down for good!

Then your answer is to close all pharmas, no more drug treatments leading to agony and death. You're morbid and you need to grow up.
