Any idea on how to get transferred to our Depuy Synthes division? I have gotten to know a few of their reps and it seems like they earn 3x our pay. I have received strong reviews, but I don't want to speak ill of our division or single myself out as someone "discontent". Just want an opportunity to make some real money, and Depuy Synthes seems like a great place to bank some major coin.

Any thoughts on how to transition the right way?

By saying you make 3x less than DS it must mean you are an Ethicon rep. Do you have a good relationship with your manager? Is he/her someone who would look out for your career or take it as a personal attack of you trying to leave? Is there a position in the market you are currently in open? If not, how relocatable are you? If you're looking at Southern California stay away. Aside from the insane politics this place is oversaturated.

DS reps are about to undergo a huge commission cut. Many were given sweetheart deals to stay on after going direct. They just lost one of their longtime reps of over 20 years in Philly for just that reason. They are completely devaluing the rep surgeon relationship.. Be careful what you get into. If you are an Ethicon rep you are going to from a 7-3 existence to one of being on call 24/7 being a grunt until you learn all the products so then you can be on call 24/7 with your own territory that you need to have constant coverage for. Factor in quality of life into your decision

    Lot of truth in this.

Before you make a move, speak to a few of the Synthes reps......you don't want to be there. Most are looking to leave. This company was once a great company but Johnson and Johnson destroyed it and the competition is both fierce and in position to destroy it

This is false. I asked my Synthes rep who overlaps my territory about commission cuts and he said they just rolled out their 2018 plan and it contains zero cuts. Also asked him how much money Synthes reps make and he said it is highly HIGHLY variable. Said top 5% are all over 500k, and top 25% are over 300k.

What kind of idiot do you have to be to believe this bullshit? There are NO, ZERO, NONE, of any reps for JnJ making 500k. You moron.

I assume you're speaking of DS Trauma. Not saying it's not possible, but I'd be shocked to find any DS trauma reps still making over 500k. Several internal changes and external factors over the past few years have made it very difficult to hit that type of comp including decreased commission (offset, though, by a growth #), the addition of Quintiles reps that consultants have to pay for out of our territory, and ever increasing pricing pressure has driven up discounts which require significant growth just to make up the deficit. That said, 300-350k is definitely still realistic for tenured reps. Not sure that would hold true for someone new coming in unless you lucked out and fell into a consultant spot in a strong, established territory. We're fortunate in our area to be in that position, but most of us have been here 10-20 years. However, you really need to consider quality of life before you make a leap to trauma. It will vary from territory to territory, but I would guess the majority of us work ridiculous hours - early mornings, late nights, weekends, holidays, missing time with family and friends, etc. There's no predictability to your schedule. I worked essentially all day both Saturday and Sunday this past weekend. It's not easy especially if you have a family and it will wear on you. You just have to decide what your # is. What comp would be enough to offset a crappy work-life balance? Ironically, that's why I was even on this board. Have to keep your options open. Good luck.
