Work expands so as to fill the time available for its completion.
    C. Northcote Parkinson

The above quote is known as Parkinson's Law. It is from the 1950's, and anyone in management should have a deep understanding of the ways it affects their business.

In my years with Abbott/Hospira, it seems this OLD observation is unknown to management.

So, we have 12 hour shifts that drain people of energy, reduce quality, reduce safety,
reduce productivity, and increase the need for overtime to compensate for ignoring
    Parkinson's Law.

The 8 Hour workday, 5 Day workweek...simply WORKS!

    Time's up. I'm done.

    And, on a related note:

"The hurrier I go, the behinder I get."
    Lewis Caroll

The Austin CCTV is congratulating everyone for ending 2013 STRONG!

About 25 seconds later...We invite everyone to sign up to help in rework
    and keep our products available.

Last 6 months of 2013 were pure hell in production. Lifecare went to 7 day work
weeks. Continuous Sterilizer had hundreds of closed carriers and hundreds more
broken door springs. Lifecare Sterilization stacker #1 was simply a hazard to be near,
    but kept running 24/7.

Apparently, for several months, Lifecare bags were punctured just before being packed &
shipped. Eventually, regional warehouses reported wet boxes and a 6 foot by 3 foot
sign-up sheet was posted for rework volunteers. I'm told there's 6 months' rework
    waiting.

Those are a few examples of how we finished 2013 STRONG!

Yep...the hurrier we went, the behinder we got.

Some people like working longer shifts to commute less and be home more. If you do not like such a shift, perhaps you should find other employment.

I started with Abbott in 2002 in McPherson Kansas. There was a waiting list to get hired. We were one of the top producers. If customer satisfaction fell below 95% the entire plant was called in for a meeting. 8 hour shifts, Monday thru Friday with some Saturday OT. We had a good retirement plan and great benefits. Everyone knew and could talk to the Plant Manager. Fast forward to 2014. Our plant manager, I have no idea who it is. Hospira took our retirement away, put us on 12 hour shifts, (because Wall Street needs us to run 24/7), we have no support on weekends, production is way up, but product is not getting out the door, customer satisfaction is running in the 40 to 50% range, product on hold has increased to the point that we have added on to the warehouse twice. Attitudes are terrible, we can't hire people. The McPherson plant is now the worst performing plant, except in the area of OSHA reportable accidents. We have got to regroup, get back to 8 hour shifts, and get people interested in working for us.

Our annual raises were put off, because of performance, (we did receive oru raises later in the year). When the 6 top management's payroll is $25 million? Our CEO makes as much in a day, as 50% of his employees make in a year. Corporate greed? Never heard of it. I only stay because of my age.

12 hours is to long for people to work and still perform at the top. We make to many little mistakes, because we are just plain tired.

Color me, 5 years from retiring.
