Was contacted by a recruiter for a neurosurgery/navigation position. Sounds like an expansion. Does anyone know what's going on with this? Is there a lot of opportunity in that division? Thanks in advance.
All these positions are expansions, otherwise known as the part of the territory the existing ASM doesn't want any longer. Whoever takes them will struggle to make plan and be pushed out within a few years. If the territory already uses the capital products (O-Arm, Midas, etc...) you'll be trying to make a living solely on disposables...good luck! My advice, stay away! People see it as "I'll be getting in at Medtronic and I'll move to another division". Good luck with that plan when you're struggling to hit your quota!
Is it really that bad? They were offering $140K for some of these positions. What is typical for an ASM to make?
They are not "OFFERING" $140K! They are "ADVERTISING" $140K with a small asterisk of being at 100% of quota (which expansion territories will NOT hit)! If the expansion territory has already purchased the capital equipment, as the above poster said, you will be selling the disposables only - otherwise known as living off your salary!!! Finally, two things; 1. ask yourself if you believe an existing ASM would split the good part of his/her territory off (AKA future large capital purchases) and 2. take the job if you don't believe me and see how close you get to the $140K "offer"!
Hey chief, it is a commissioned sales position. There is an at plan number. If you make plan that is what you get paid. If you are over you get more, if you are under you get less. That's it.
Thanks for the feedback. My current job is 100% commission - and although the pay is not competitive, my company is upfront about what I am going to make annually. Good to know this isn't what exactly what it's being portrayed as. How is it working for Medtronic neuro? How is it calling on neurosurgeons?
I was told $160K is what to expect at plan for this role and no base pay. Not sure if this is accurate but it came directly from management. Is this a role that has lots of turnover?
Let me give a real response. 140K is at plan. Yes you can make more and this is a great company to work for. Even if this was split off territory there's still a lot of great products you have in the bag with more to come. Good luck and most people come to this website to complain so don't look for the best answers when looking on here.
I carried the bag for 8+ years, they are now paying peanuts and trying to actively manage what they pay out in compensation by setting unattainable quotas. They are loosing a lot of good people and it will catch up with them. Is no longer the great company it once was. If you are looking to make $100k you’ll be okay, but if you are looking for $200k+...keep looking.
