Does anyone know for sure how our unemployment will be impacted with the new severance law? I called them several weeks ago, but said it was too new of a law and that an examiner would decide on a case by case basis. They said it would be impacted, but he did not know if a lump sum amount made a difference or if we have to wait 5 months. thanks for any serious replies.

Once you are officially terminated (60 days from your call) you will be eligible for UC in PA. Lump sum payment makes no difference. Once you are officially terminated from Novartis, you are eligible for UC.

You had better check out the new laws regarding unemployment when a severance is involved. The laws changed for 2012.

Severance is considered salary and your unemployment will be severely impacted. Sorry, I know because it happened to me.

Here is a scenario I haven't seen an an answer for yet. If you are currently collecting unemployment and then return to work as an independent contractor via a 1099 (where you are no longer contributing into UC) can you still collect UC based on your initial claim and base year from the previously qualifying income?

    Depends on the state.
