I am not new to pharma. I have been in the industry for quite a long time, and often find myself wondering if / when I should look for another career option for myself. I have worked for all-sized pharma companies, won quite a few awards and PCs, moved up the ranks in terms of being a rep. I often see people on this site complaining about how they are done with this industry, but I have recently decided that pharma has been good to me and my family. This wasn't an easy decision, but after weighing the pros and cons of the job, it is the right place for me to maximize my experience and support my family. For those that have decided to make this their long-term career choice, how are you doing it? We all know the negatives that make us want to up and quit this job, or hop to the next job that ultimately turns into this one a year or two in. How do we look past the negatives and embrace this as a long-term career? Please only reply with positive feedback, as I have already seen the 99% that remains on this site telling me to find another job. Thanks.

Sounds like you are well on your way to accepting it for what it is. They will pay someone to do the racket...it might as well be you. Save...save...and then save some more. Most reps inflate their lifestyle and feel they “deserve” a larger house or a baller vacation. Start to plan for your eventual layoff/exit. Be prepared and enjoy earning the funny money while the getting is good.

Good advice. I've been in involved in 5 layoffs. Every time I thought it wouldn't happen again, so in hindsight I should've saved more. I'd still like to be in the business, but nowadays I face age discrimination. My beef with many pharma companies is that they promote too many too quickly, and some of these late-20's, early 30's folks don't have the maturity or people skills to manage correctly, let alone know who to hire. They are generally cocky, arrogant and wanting to make a name for themselves, and thus are generally assholes.
