Is there 1 pharmaceutical company worth working for these days?

    Don't think so.

Celgene I&I was the place the past 4 years. If you could sell, it was the place to be with a 100% focus on seeing docs and getting paid. No silly teleconferences, talking to the marketing robots, no meetings, no talking to the managed care jokers. Just driving scripts.

Sadly, no longer the place. Novartis lawyers and compliance officials who are going to law school at night have created an atmosphere of fear and accusations.

I'd say there's nothing left, although we do hear rumors that a good life can be found in specialty pharmacy sales if you get in on the ground floor and can work 24 months before getting sold to a big boy.

Not likely for long, unfortunately. Too many managers who have no business “leading” people...think highway patrolman and gals who were not given enough attention their whole life. Think of it as mercenary work here on out...no loyalty...do what’s best for you and follow the rare manager who isn’t a sociopath.

very true. work for small companies with no HR department either, especially if you are an older man. the discrimination vs. men is very strong these days. it always was, but now its just out in the open.

NO. When I think about it, I am so depressed that this is what I've done with my life. 50 years old and still in pharma. Haven't been a rep in years, got into management, marketing, market access- but no matter the job title, I'm still tethered to this culture. My friends in other industries have zero respect for what I do for a living- even those who I make more than in salary! Sad and pathetic- just waiting to retire and pretend it never happened- then I'll start doing drugs:)

Well, you are not alone brother...I rue the day I ever set foot into my first pharma sales interview...Granted,
back then, it was a good job and they treated reps better...But I ended up getting bounced out at 50 by a boss
half my age, was ruined financially, and plagued by PTSD by the experience...Truly, an awful way to make a living and a wasted work life...No other industry inflicts the kind of emotional damage that the Pharma industry does. And yes, it has become a big joke in popular culture how these companies are more like cults...

Do not define yourself by your job. Appreciate the good things Pharma has brought into your life. I am approaching 50 and found myself at a shitty startup with a contract company but overall my career was enjoyable.

Denial ain't just a river in Egypt...The cliche "Do not define yourself by your job" is
a tasty soundbite, and the staple of many self-help books...The reality is a man is
absolutely defined by his job, and to think otherwise is foolhardy. Glad you enjoyed
your deli career, but pharma is a joke, and no way to go through life son..

Here's the deal: Back in the day, 30-40 years ago, the doctors relied on our expertise when prescribing meds to patients. Now, they no longer need to get information from reps. They can get it from the internet, the pharmacists, their peers, etc. The gig is up folks! It's been a great ride, but the days of spending any meaningful time with a busy doc are over. Unless we reinvent our approach, there will be no more drug reps spending any type of time with their prescribers.

    Thoughts??

I've been hearing this since about 1991 and it never changes...The pharma biz doesn't work like a normal biz and the money and margins are just ridiculous for the drug companies...There will always be armies of drug reps as long as their are armies of middle management that report to senior management...They all need their useful idiots below them...the more things change, the more they stay the same...

The gig is not only not up, but it will go on and on and on...people will always take meds cuz: "You want to live don't ya'?"

"Armies of drug reps", really? I have been unemployed for a year. Very few jobs out there, even with contract companies. There are very few pharmaceutical sales positions available. It's terrible. You sound like someone who is employed. Good for you, I am not being negative. It's rough out there if you are unemployed and in pharmaceuticals....really rough! Companies do not want older reps. I don't even get called for interviews I am qualified for. It's scary! really!

90% of pharma companies are monkey jobs. For idiots. Sample droppers. Losers. I used to be in the 10% but because of layoffs and downsizing I too am now a loser.

It’s difficult to take a step back or multiple steps back. The sad fact is I wasted my youth and talents in this industry and now it’s too late to switch careers as I’m in my late 40’s.

This is a terrible industry to be in. I hope young people with skills pursue a different careers path. I wasted my life here. I hope others don’t do the same.

You are not alone brother...(or sister) I too wasted my prime years and talents in this awful industry, thinking I was cheating the system because I was making 100K for working part time as a drug rep...Well, I am in my late '50s and the joke was definitely on me in retrospect...Hemorrhaging my savings, no health insurance, completely unemployable (and yes, even Home Depot turned me down due to my previous salary) and just running out the clock on life basically...

I rue the day I ever decided on pharma sales as a "career." Just a a magnificently bad move.

i know it is scary...and it gets a lot scarier...Pharma sales translates very poorly into other professions...
Tough to cross over and start from scratch...try being in your late 50s like I am and unemployed now for
    7 years...

i wish I had never set foot in pharmaceutical sales...awful job...terrible career choice.

About 10 years ago I was working for a company that had a "women's empowerment club" or some bullshit like that. It was led by the biggest biotch RM I have ever seen. Of course she bullied all the women, and a few beta guys, to join it. Her exploits were well documented when the layoffs started. She saved only women from her club and one beta. On her LinkedIn it list one of her strengths as overseeing 4 layoffs lol. Her mere initials in a thread on CP would get it deleted. Her and a big fatso manager. Both have wimpy husbands so they think they can push anyone around. Oh the karma.....
