Wearables originated as a fitness device that tracked and monitored steps to meet fitness goals. The fitness devices demonstrated a unique way to increase healthy habits using a user-friendly device that is linked to a mobile application. Medical wearables have some similarities, but they provide a more clinical approach that works to proactively improve patients health by allowing the doctor to monitor their progress. Medical wearables have become more relevant in the healthcare industry due to its ability to enhance healthcare system through the monitoring of patients remotely (Al-Siddiq,2018). Wearables can provide real time access to health information and records on patients who utilize the device and can help with effectively diagnosing patients and providing treatment options. Wearables are small devices that are undetectable and have valuable features such as wireless data transmission, real-time feedback, and the ability for the patients and doctors to get alerts (Al-Siddiq,2018). Wearables are not only a great tool that allows doctors to monitor patients, the benefits go beyond aiding the healthcare system because it also allows the patient to take control and monitor their own health as well. There are some challenges with medical wearables when referring to billing. Even though medical wearables provide medical data that is relevant, in order to fully be implemented into the healthcare system, the information obtained from the device must be “billable” (Al-Siddiq,2018). In other words, a medical wearable will never be implemented in the healthcare system unless the information is proven to be medically relevant. However, the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid created payment rules that will allow give some medical technology companies a chance at reimbursement (Al-Siddiq,2018).
