I currently work for ADP and am doing well. I have only been there for 8 months and only took the position to get a track record for med device sales. I recently applied for an entry level technology consultant position with Arthrex distributor in Nj. I am taking the anatomy test on Monday.

I have seen some bad reviews about the distrubutorship model and have a few questions:

-Is it worth leaving ADP without a year under my belt for the industry experience? I talked to a recruiter and they said working for a dist may not be a good idea. I would be taking a pay cut with no benefits.

    -What is the training like?

-How do you generate sales while in the OR all day. Do you do any cold calling or prospecting?

    - is there a clear career path to start making some real money? I want to get into this industry so badly and think this may be a good opportunity, however I don’t want to be stuck in a bad company culture and all I see are negative reviews. I am willing to put the time in to learn and do the grunt work as long as it is worth it in the long run.

Run away. Arthrex has basically become the Walmart of orthopedics. They have good sportsmed stuff but have knockoffs of everything else. That and being run by a German it creates a very intense environment that leave most people failing. They have huge turnover and you are better staying put for a while longer getting more experience for better opportunity.

Arthrex is Phizer of med device. You won’t make over 60K. If you take the position start looking for a better gig immediately. Their sports medicine stuff is good but everyone is catching up. The company has peaked and can’t compete with the big boys. Nowhere to go but down.

Thank you I appreciate the feedback. Have either of you worked for an Arthrex distributor? If so in which area? It is tough to make a decision with such mixed reviews.

I am not chasing the money just yet, being brand new to the industry. However I think 2 years with Arthrex would look a whole lot better than 2 years of selling payroll no?

There’s no mixed reviews- all distributors pay the same now a days. And the benefits are a driver to stay either...

Treat Arthrex as a junior college. Spend 2 years there and transfer to a quality company that aligns with your goals. I spent my time with them and used them to get an upgrade.

Do you mind telling me how much they offered you? Same position and want to know what the asking price for this position is.

They like to keep reps covering around 750K. At a 10% rate you could bring home 75K before any expenses.

Or you could be place on one of this wonderful sales teams where you get a sliver of the pie. And at any given time your small piece could be changed.

It has been stated earlier. Be looking for something else if you take the job.

totally correct- and once you get a sliver of the commission rate, you get a share of all expenses and help you distributors pay their expenses.. there is way better opp’s out there- did anyone mention mandatory sharing your sliver if you hit quota to bring on a manadatory new hire-
Least you have 2-3 days a week to cut lawns

For this post and others regarding moving from "non-surgical" jobs to a medical device....

You have to remember you are completely changing careers. Because you were great at selling payroll and made $73K your 2nd year out of college, you are bringing little value to the device company.

Without medical experience, you are actually a liability for a minimum of ayear as you gain experience and learn "the language" of device sales.

Every rep I know who has put in the time to learn, had passion for the industry, GROWN business has been able to have very good careers with Arthrex or whoever.

*Some distributors can have shady components. Keep your eyes open and you'll be fine.
