Those were the old days. When we paid $30 a month for the company car. Now getting your own car and being reimbursed is much better than the company car. Just do the math.

I do t know anyone who took the option to be reimbursed. Do they just reimburse milage or is there a monthly stipend?

Depending on the cost of living in your town, the cost of a new nissan, the cost of gas, and average miles reported for the last 3 years, they formulate your monthly stipend from $400 to $800, and $.13 to $.25 per mile. The more you drive the more they reimburse.

Also calculate the $150-200/mo you don't pay for the company car and save.

You are too high re monthly stipend but your point re avoiding the monthly car charge is one that many forget about when they crunch numbers.... buying a cpo car can really help make the numbers add up; at any rate driving a nice car is worth a few nickels given the amount of time we spend in a car.

You will NOT “make money” by driving your own car but if you are smart about it you can be in a much better ride for near equal money.

One caveat... I know of a person who territory changed dramatically to where she was driving 55k per year... things did not work out so well for her - there are a few risks involved in taking on ownership but in general it can work out barring unforeseen circumstances. If you are really risk adverse or just plain cheap stay with fleet

Stipend is more like 300/mo... good point about what you don’t pay; many people fail to include this when they crunch the numbers...

if you are really risk adverse and/or financially strapped or just plain cheap take the fleet option.

I’m willing to take on some risk and maybe spend a few bucks to drive something I want to drive. It’s really that simple

If they give you a 2018 model or older, I can see why you would want your own car. But the 2019 and newer altimas aren’t bad. Just wish they would offer SUV for some of us larger reps

also factor in your insurance costs, routine maintenance, and risk, heavy snow territories use the fleet car ! The AWD Altima is a nice ride, add snow/winter tires and it’s a better bet.

I get $400+ per month. A buddy said his reimbursement was $850+ in Arizona. He covers a huge territory. If you buy an inexpensive little car that gets 40+ mpg you will absolutely PROFIT from this. If you can't figure this out when they send you the estimate, then you're too dense to do the program. You, if that dumb, should always drive the company car.

I suppose if you want to log 40k in a used Prius you could pocket a few nickels... not for me given the amount of time spent in a,car.

They put gps trackers in the cars?

LOL. .... you can easily clear a couple grand. Have you even gotten your reimbursement letter and done all of the math?

Only downside is when car breaks down too much or after the warranty expires. If get a very reliable car that has low depreciation, trading in every 3 years should be quite profitable. Or drive what you like and break even. Not a bad program like it used to be.

Wouldn’t it be an invasion of privacy and illegal for GPS devices to be placed in the cars since reps use them outside of work too?

    it would, so they don't.
