I’m absolutely miserable in my position but my tuition reimbursement contract says I’d have to pay back the money if I left before 2 years. I just got a job I really want to take...do they take these contracts pretty seriously with tuition, relocation repayment etc.?

Why do you think that these perks are called “golden handcuffs”? If your new employer wants you badly enough they’ll reimburse you for your loss. Ask them.

When I left my former pharma company they had the same rules with Tuition Reimbursement but I didn’t have to pay it back. Who knows how Amgen will enforce it, maybe more diligent about it since they have it outsourced to EdAssist. As someone mentioned it wouldn’t hurt to ask your prospective new employer, they may cover it for you. Best of luck!

Really, so the company provided you with tuition reimbursement, and you want to leave (which is perfectly fine), but you want to re-neg on your end of the deal?!? Give us a break! Do the right thing, pay back what you owe and get on your way.

Give you a break? Amgen didn’t renegotiate when they suddenly moved me to a different city and now a completely different department. I made the agreement under different conditions

Amgen does not make you pay tuition back.

Does anyone else know any more about this? I moved cross-country to California to work for Amgen about 9 months ago (after ~2 years of working for them on the east coast) and yes, I also benefitted from their relocation assistance during the move. I had a really close call with one of the wildfires about 2 months ago and now I can't sleep/am experiencing some serious ptsd, and am considering leaving. I'm wondering how seriously the payback is enforced.

I’ve heard they do require relocation payback if you leave early. Go on disability if necessary.

Suck it buttercup. Our fires have been world news for over a century.

I find it disrespectful that you want to leave Amgen and "hope" they do not come after you for tuition and relocation costs.

Grow up and take responsibility. Put in your time...It will help you show stability on your resume in years to come.

Also, be cautious about providing too much detail on CP. You provided the following:

-Worked for Amgen on East Coast
-Moved across US from East Coast
-Was given tuition help (this identifies that you are most likely under 30
    -Was given relocation help
    -Complaining about wildfires.
You are opening yourself up to be on their radar.

I do NOT want to come across as a weirdo, but you need to do a better job of protecting your identity.
Amgen monitors this site. I sure hope you are not using an Amgen device to post.

Amgen is a company run by lawyers. While I understand the ptsd from the fires, and that might allow you to leave and not pay back, under extenuating circumstances , I would not count on it.

Seriously...the wildfires aren’t Amgen’s fault. That’s ridiculous- millions of people all over Calirfornia have been affected by the wildfires. That comes with living in the dry climate. That would be like complaining because it snowed on the east coast.
