Is it me? Or is this industry going down the tubes??

It's definitely seen better days, and may be in the tubes by 1990's comparison. However, the industry is still better than most. It could always be worse ...

Somewhere about 6 -7 years ago, the executive strategies became to browbeat and demean your employees through endless micromanagement. Before then, sales reps were motivated with incentives to make more money for performance, promotion, and marketing directors making you the best of the best at selling their products. Now, experienced reps with relationships have been told their worthless, new employees who are " young and hungry" are more effective. Reps are churned and burned through by all these companies, leaving the industry full of people unemployed or constantly looking. Commissions are manipulated to be unobtainable and then you work for nothing while being told your not a good salesperson. Everyone suffers from post traumatic shock, their faces plastered with fake smiles, trying to get through on more day. Fa la la la la......

I couldn't agree with you more. I am curious to see if the strategy has paid off and turned into a higher profit margin. I am with a fantastic company that still values long term employees (who deliver)...the few of us they have stuck with appreciated that and are continually motivated to sell. Although I make great money and QOL is good I am scared shitless about the future... Reps in Europe and Canada make a fraction of what we do.

I applaud you for having done this; I'm sure it took a lot of courage to make such a proposal. I am in a situation now that sounds very similar to the one you were in three years ago: I am successful but BORED out of my skull. Any suggestions on how to frame up something like this to give it the best chance of being seriously considered if/when presented to management?

    Thanks!

Legitimately curious as to what income you've heard for reps in Europe and Canada. Think it will come to that in the US? If so, how soon?

I don't have exact details about compensation in Europe, but I have heard it is significantly lower for medical device reps..... according to a few of my fortune 500 rep friends (I am with a start-up). My wife who is a scientist for a pharma company says the pay in Europe for her position is roughly 60-70% of that within the USA, but remember they have country retirement plans and it much more difficult to fire someone.

I haven't been to this website since my pharma days over a decade ago, but I have to say this is the most realistic post I've ever seen on here. I've been in medical devices since 2004 and I'm so burned out and beaten down I cant take it anymore. I also made really good money in this industry till about 2008 when insurances covered most products and doctors were accessable. Since 2008 I've been with 3 companies trying to support my family and get back to the good old days. Every company I've worked for denied any reality of what was going on in the field. I've been with a ortho distributor for 6 months now. The guy who owns the distributorship is an old Stryker representative who has been out in the field in years and still thinks you can see doctors all day long and get 100% your first day on the job. He just told me Friday that he's done paying me salary, because my Janauary and
February were low, ignoring all the growth and sales I had in 4th quarter. I want to leave industry and get back to being a salesman and have some happiness. I really found your post helpful, because I thought I was the only experiencing the endless nightmare this industry has become.

    Hey,

I have an advice. I am no expert.

Why don't you contact the company which you worked for earlier?
I am sure they respect you since you had a good career there.

And this is what you have been doing for the past 15 years.
So you must be gotten real good at it because of your experience.

May be your old company might welcome you back ?

Burnout and depression are positively significantly correlated with each other. Medical and professional help is really important. We all go through lifestyle depression and takes great willpower. I have read this which seems really relevant https://mangoclinic.com/strategies-to-fight-depression/ where different people will take a different pathway to treat depression. I never felt like adulting anyway but then I want to let you see the brighter side of the tunnel. What suited best to me will not work for anyone. Some are pro antidepressants to solve burnout and others will make lifestyle changes- not simply the same old thing like workout or eating habits only. Agoraphobia can make you feel suffocated at the end of the day. We can limit our banking or food delivery items to be delivered at the doorstep but still, we need to go out Who will be your best confidant? Will any family member be willing to work and work in the meantime whereby you can have a time out a bit? Also if you can check which strategy that is scientifically and medically supported would suit you best?
I really want you to work out this. I have been the sailor of a similar depressed boat. I do wish a benevolent hand comes out and plunge me out of the muddy waters but I know the self is the best thing one can trust on. :)
