I was recently contacted by a recruiter regarding a Sales Specialist position. I have 14 years of medical device sales. Over the weekend I read some of the postings on CP regarding KCI. I understand there is a lot going on now and there have been many changes over the last few years.
If possible, I would like to put that aside for now and obtain some information on the position alone. I'm interested in the responsibilities of the position, compensation, and pros and cons of the position itself.

Thanks in advance for your help

Really? Please tell me your recruiters pitch. I would love to hear this. How does one recruit people to a company in such turmoil? Better yet, how does a candidate sincerely look into a position here? Terrible

It's not possible to put the issues mentioned above aside. Look elsewhere.

Its like interviewing for AOL, Polaroid, or any Long Distance Carrier at the back end of their height. Recruiters will tell you how historically strong the company is and the future is brighter than ever. i got the pitch a year ago and for at least 6 months I belived it. But everyone is either looking for another job, wishes they had not come here or just bitching to every other rep of how bad it it. Its septic here and somewhat embarassing to say you work for KCI unlike it probably was 5 years ago. I just want to be honest with you...I have never been more stressed in my life wondering what the future is like and it is taking a toll on my family life. Good people at the field level work here, management not so much and the products are good but the competition that was not here a few years ago has the our PE firm wondering what they got them selves in and how in the world they will ever make their money back. My guess is that the only shot is to go public and sell stocks a few months end before shareholders figure it out.

Run as fast as you can, this job is terrible. It is the most stressful job you will ever have. Previous posters are right. Management is awful, the pay is not worth it, and the goals are unrealistic. Competition is fierce and reimbursement is terrible. Stay away.

This could be a great job. But the reality is the deck is stacked against us. I agree with the above that the future stresses me out the most...unrealistic expectations and shitty pay. I wouldn't pursue this and I am looking to get out. Very sad

Not a troll or upper management. All of it depends on your manager and territory. Historically large territories will do fine, while smaller ones barely make anything over the low base. Products are great and gold standard. Ask about realistic earnings for the territory, NOT historical earnings or national average. With new comp plan, all has changed. Managers will make or break this job.

SSS jobs like you are asking about are still not completely secure. Reimbursements are good for some products and not so much for others. Base is higher than core side.

I still love what I do and enjoy the job tremendously.

Well yes, I believe all the passengers on the Titantic were enjoying themselves and having a grand old time until they hit the iceberg. Its tough to sleep at night when you have zero stability or control over the uncertain future.

    original poster again

With the notable exception of #8 (thanks) I got my answer. Actually got an answer to a question I didn't even ask. I read over some of the other threads and so what I got was this: Forget the position because who would want to work with a bunch of caustic, ill tempered, venom spewing assholes? I mean company meetings must be a real blast. Does everyone just sit in a big circle and see who can come up with the best sarcastic remark? Never have seen this before. If the company is that bad, why do you stay??? Or can you not get another position and you're stuck there?

    BTW
The Titanic was a marvel of engineering until an EMPLOYEE DROVE IT INTO A ICEBERG!!!!!

    WOW

I guess you are correct, an employee of the Titanic did run it into an iceberg...however it was the captain ordering full speed ahead and not heeding the warnings of icebergs on a calm evening when they would be difficult to spot. Think about it.

By all means interview for the position, you have been warned. I have been out for over a year and it was the best decision I ever made.

Oh please, this board is more caustic than most on CP due to the amount of absolute delusion and disconnect in the San Antonio offices. We had a very large sales force in the early years and rightly so as this was brand new technology and it is always difficult to teach clinicians anything NEW. never mind SIMPLE. The numbers of issues and complaints here are mostly legitimate and results from an upper management philosophy that went from medical device to big pharma. They are not the same. They will never be the same.
Management listening to the field is now longer existent. You can be believe it or not. Maybe you are the one that can make a difference. It is not the field that spews mistruths here. Come on aboard and see for yourself

Prevena wont be around in a year. More complaints and adverse events report than units sold.

KCI simply cannot go anywhere but down. We once had 95% marketshare and this job was the best in the industry. Time evolves and now we have maybe 75% and are losing more and more every day. We had no competitors in the gold old days and now have 5-8 new companies. Reimbursement is also about 60% of what it was and we are constantly driving down the price in acute facilities. The problem is that we were bought by a venture capital company right when the big turn happened and now they are wondering how they will ever get their money back, The company simply will not sell for what they paid for it (and not even close) so the backup plan is to buy companies and take the company public. The IPO will be hyped and several of them may make some money on that but when the numbers become public and they see the low gowth and profitability, the people are the ones that will be chopped. Sad but true story of the next two years at KCI

What ever happened with Prevena. With SSI being high on the list of preventative care and hospitals being held accountable for "Never Events" why hasn't this product been used for ever open surgical procedure that is at risk?

I am glad I did not take this job. I heard that they were all let go. I have not been back to CP in about a month and can not believe all the negativity, number of views, and number of posts. KCI has more view and posts then any site on this board. How big is this company? You look at some of the bigger companies, Medtronic, JnJ, Covidien and Baxter not one of them has as many posts/views as KCI. They should call this KCI Squawk board. Maybe then the company could make some money.

Having said all that buddy, how dumb are you for actually thinking of interviewing and taking a job at KCI?
