AMO, Abbott Medical Optics

Anyone have any thoughts on what Abbott is going to do with AMO. They bought the company but have left in place its failing management and do not seem too motivated to make that company work. Still failing, unable to compete with Alcon, and way under powered.

Terrible company. Probably one of the worst run companies I've ever been a part of.

High turnover, products have major issues and are constantly being recalled. Alcon controls 90% of the market. The company is a train wreck and is looked at poorly by Abbott. Would not be surprised if the company is sold off again due to poor sales.

 

Really? That is dissapointing to hear. I recently interviewed for a Phaco Specialist position selling the capital and it sounded like a good gig. The lens reps feed you leads, you do the demos and close the sale. Is it really that bad? Not a good move? I'm in devices right now selling a mix of capital and other products. Looking to make a change though. Not a good move to AMO? The travel looked a little heavy but not a lot of cold calling.

 

Find out what the market share is in the territory you're interviewing for. Odds are, Alcon has the majority and if that's the case run away. The AMO bag of products are inferior and can only be sold on price and relationship. That's just my opinion but do your home work. If the territory is open, it's probably not good. Training was a joke.

 

I recently took a job here...so far so good. Training was fine even compared to JnJ.....it is harder to sell but have sold 4 cat phaco units this year and should get 8-10 more ..time will tell....i hear u on the other stuff, but field managers and directors have so far been supportive...

I am also looking into the Phaco Specialist role, not in FL, does anyone have any advice. I am currently in device and hear good things about Abbott, yet I do not know anyone working for AMO. Also, what is base salary range / commision structure like?

Don't go to work at Amo. Catherine mazzacco is ruining the company. She doesn't care about the people. She thinks all of the AMO people are idiots and is replacing them with people from other Abbott divisions.

The environment is toxic.

disagree on the new lady.....she has to do some unpopular things to change the company. lets give her a few years and then judge. She doesn t have to like the people.....just give the people a chance to win with new products, improved RnD, and better management at all levels....the industry is sick of Alcon controlling so much business....I hope she can make a difference...Her track record in Europe was good....lets see what happens

 

You are right every new manager from Abbott being dropped into AMO positions
(usually accountants with pharma background, zero people skills and no insight into ophthalmology)
Have been told AMO people are useless idiots - certainly there is a fair share of them but the worst are in the ELT- watch them loose a lot of good people

 

Has anyone noticed that there has been a flurry of negative reviews on this company on glassdoor.com and most recently the company now has no profile available on the site? Is that because HR pulled it because of negativity? Hmmmm...
