Just curious as to what avenues top stryker ortho reps pursue after they can't grind 24/7 anymore. Take sales management out of the equation. Less hours, same pay hopefully? Would like your input. Thanks.

While I was at one of the NSM's out in San Diego a few yrs back, I was at a strip club & had a 3way w/ a couple of 'em. Long story short I met a movie director that same night & he gave me his card & told me to call him if I'm ever out in Cali or looking for a new gig. Fast Forward to 2013......I'm now in porn believe it or not making a little less than I was at SYK, but living well banging some of the hottest ass imagineable!!!! Thank you Stryker!

I sell commercial flooring/carpeting and call on architects/installers etc. I get 10% gross on everything. 24K expense allowance and a car. Territory is 2.1 M and I work 40-50 hours tops. Does not sound sexy but Jesus the money is amazing. No rules/regulations just win the friend battle. Best transition ever. Go talk to some local flooring people jobs all over with many retiring after 20-35 years in a territory, a dream transition! Better than financial advisors in rural areas.

Just curious….do you work for someone local or one of the bigger chains?

Big flooring/carpeting company. Thousands of sales people. No one ever leaves, wonder why? Same comp plan for 40 years. Additional expense account and car allowance are awesome.

Ah, the allure of medical device sales. I used to buy into it as well. "everybody wants to be in Ortho" and so on. There are many other non-medical fields where sales reps make great money with better benefits. I used to work at Stryker and now I work for Labrada selling supplements. Best move I ever made.

Yeah seriously, the sales world goes far beyond the medical device industry. Hell, I opened my own little lemonade stand on the street corner a couple months ago and things couldn't be better. Sure, the competition is rough sometimes (especially when that little bitch Courtney from down the street undercuts my goods by a nickel. That little tramp) and my profit margins aren't great (about 10 cents per cup if my math is right), but the hours are good and, dare I say it, the ladies love it. Huge conversation starter.

Honestly, it makes me so happy to wake up in the morning and say to myself "gee, my two boys must be really proud to have a successful father like myself". And, just between you and me, things with the Mrs. have been heating up lately since I've started my new position.

If my numbers are right, I should be able to hire a few extra neighborhood kids next summer to help run my stand. The pay won't be great and for Christ's sake they definitely can't unionize, but I figure I'll be doing my part to help the struggling economy. Pay it forward, I suppose. For anyone who's interested, here's a YouTube video that my son put together to show how successful we've been this summer: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dQw4w9WgXcQ

I'm an ASR out in Virginia. I was just curious what your expertise in Trauma gets you after showing you can grow territory. For example, where do Top Ortho reps transition to after many years in the field? Yeah you can make more money in flooring, but this job is hardcore and I love it.

I am really interested to hear if this flooring thing is legitimate or someone BSing as usual on cafepharma. I've been in this business for around 8 years. The cool factor of scrubs and being in the OR has worn off. If I can make the same or more money and not have to deal with some of the nonsense that goes with this job I would be very interested. I am doing very well in Ortho but every year it seems like there is more BS to deal with, surgeons seem to be less and less willing to go to bat for you, and accounts just care about getting their Ortho spend down. What are some of the areas that reps who have left medical or Ortho have gone into and done well?

Ditto. The problem is a) anyone who left Med Device is probably not coming back to Cafepharma to post & b) even if they did, they're not going to blab what they're doing b/c we're a competition/threat if u think about it. It's like a hot stock, noone wants to spill the beans...

Kind of an odd jump, but I became a financial advisor. With the network I built up in device, I made the same amount my first year, and almost 2x as much my second year. The commission is great, plus renewal commissions each year. Write a whole life policy on your physician buddy and you'll take home a fat check.
