Motivation is probably the most important factor in outside sales success. More than intelligence, experience, education. Alcon is hurting their sales--Obviously---and they have themselves to thank!!
Reps' motivation is at an ALL-time low. Alcon changes goals in the middle of a quarter. Goals are called 'stretch' goals which we have learned to know are unrealistic. Raises goals for products (travatan) that have a direct generic competitor. Alcon, if we aren't going to meet our 'stretch' goals, and you're not going to pay bonuses, call us customer service reps.
Rumors of layoffs all over which Alcon does not address. All of this combined leads to the complete lack of motivation that sends your sales in a downward spiral. Reps are looking for other jobs & leaving left and right. Look at all the vacancies on the roster.

hit the nail on the head. Unfortunately its not just Alcon, but the industry as a whole. Not exactly sure how the industry would ever reverse the trend on the "numbers are down cut the sales force" mentality. I would get out if i could find a position that allows the freedom we have plus better pay...

You can't sell a refrigerator to an Eskimo if he does not anything to eat. Hospitals, managed care and formularies are getting wise to the 'less drops -more potency - better compliance' myth that costs orders of magnitude more than generic eye drops.

The pharma rep was nothing more than a glorified car salesman. The days of cheap gasoline are past!
