Merck just announced a reduction of 20% of their entire workforce (some had already been announced previously).

Pfizer surely will follow Merck's lead in the big pharma oligopoly.

Merck is letting go of 8,500 worldwide over next year; no big deal, attrition.

Only 2,900 field salesman in all of Pfizer left. Not much else to cut?

Before 500 quit since Spring and 100 added for Xeljanz. 3,500 may be on the books, but 2,900 active in field positions today.

Merck announced today that 8500 will be in a layoff, added to the 7500 recently announced to cover all areas, R&D, sales, and marketing. Totaling 20% reduction in the entire company. In my book that = 16,000 people. It is a BIG, BIG deal to anyone who is interested in the facts. Oh, that's right. This is Pfizer, they don't let something like the facts get in the way of their distorted opinion like above.

And don't think that pfizer management did not notice that Merck stock went up over 2% today on the RIF news. Pfizer management will expect the same when they announce the cuts going into the 4th quarter so they can cash in their stock options.

Dont you think selling or closing Groton will count as a sizable reduction? If it is broken up and sold of bit-by-bit, couldn't that be RIF of 2,000?

Groton's fate was decided well before the current restructure scheme which emphasizes changes in the business units- not R&D. Expect sales, admin, marketing, medical affairs to take big hits.

Agree with the above post. We are running anywhere from a 10-12% vacancy rate. Actual numbers of salesforce from senior leaders on down is around 2800-2900 people.

Last year at Cluster 1 POA in Vegas there were 1,400 reps in attendance. Definitely no more than 2,800 to 3,000 primary care reps and managers nationwide for all clusters.

Whatever the numbers...the facts are there: if you are not looking to exit pharma...it is your own fault!

These "jobs" are coming to a close!

    Best of luck to all!

Yes! You are an idiot if you stay in pharma. For those who stay in stop whining about your stressful life because you choose to stay on the titanic!

Hogwash, still too many. New technology and Drs have NO time or tolerance for reps. They can order samples of an App and google what they need to know.

    It's a dying profession
