The only bet here is that someone will buy the Division. Miles' recent remarks point to this as well: like Huck Finn, pretending that painting a fence is fun so that his friends will fight to take over this chore, Miles is making it appear that Diabetes is good business, hoping someone will swallow his bait and take ADC off his hands.

We're overdue for the annual layoffs at ADC. We all know how poorly the US business has been trending for the last 18 months, and there is nothing in site that can change that.

Good sources in Alameda have said the layoff list, letters, and package have been ready since late January, and every since then it's been "ready, aim, fir.... um, hold", like clockwork, every 45 days.

Speculation is that it has something to do with a pending potential sale of the division or brands: if the sale goes through the buyer gets first rights to interview and keep the people they want; if the deal falls through, ADC finishes sentence above with "fire", and the layoff commences. The deal has been vacillating back and forth for months.

No PR please; Karl and Matt please STFU for a change and not post your dribble. Curious to see if the rest of us are all hearing the same thing?

Any buyer is going to close the Alameda site because no manufacturing takes place there. And probably Ireland too, consolidating all operations in Witney, UK. It makes no logical sense to have multiple sites. Remember that other companies in this business have done much the same thing, so it should not be a surprise.

Abbott doesn't want to do this because because of the political storm that will follow. The Irish government will want their subsidy cash back for a start. Far easier to let the new owners take the flak.

Just speculation. Rumors. This the bathroom wall at a bus station.

The only facts we all know is that ADC's business continues to trend down in a slow but steady decline, driven by ADC gradually losing existing, and not winning new, bids (which is all that matters in this business), there are no viable new products in the pipe that can make a difference, and every year ADC does a layoff.

These are the incontestable facts, out there for all to see, requiting no speculation.

The other guy is right. It used to be when I went to CVS or Walgreens I saw FreeStyle meters prominently displayed. Now on the back shelf or not their at all. Bad for ADC.

95% of all glucose testing is covered by Plans, so this business is all about formularies and winning bids, and being Teir 1. Period. End of story. And the way to win bids and get on formulary is based 100% on price. Low cost wins, period. Fractions of pennies win. Nothing else matters.

That's why Nacho Libre is DOA. The Plans have already said only for Type 1, and only for certain situations. And then, it's just a maybe, depending on final costs. Added to that, it does not conform to FDA accuracy requirements. DOA x 2.

Despite this, or perhaps more accurately, in spite of this known fact, ADC has for many years, almost a decade now, made the strategic decision to piss into the wind and not fight on price. Instead, ADC tried to sell on features and benefits. While perhaps commendable, the result was the same none the less, and after all these years and lost bids, here we stand, pissing into the wind, with our cloths soaked from our own urine.

ADC tried to go around the Plans on the cheap with Promise, with zero success.

We see the results of the Grand Plan everyday at retail, and every time a patient goes to the nurse or pharmacist or mail order to get set up: Freestyle is a rare butterfly. Or when Formularies change, and Freestyle goes away, usually as Tier 2 or 3.

There is not one single person at ADC that does not know all this. Well, ecxept Matt, but he's as dumb as a stump anyway, so let's not count that.

    Good luck to all.

Spot on! Everyone who works here knows this. Even Duncan and his jester Karl. If fact this summary could be right from Karl's mouth: I've heard him say the same thing more than a few times over drinks.

So what will Abbott do with ADC? The buyout rumors have been around since 2009, will this happen? Or just continue to cost reduce ADC and make money on the downward path to shut down?

Glad I don't work there anymore. Became a shothole company.

This is a good short discussion of Libre and some up and coming diabetes equipment. The tattoo will take longer that 2017 more like 2019 from what I have read. Then there is the question of accuracy in this type of sensor (remember Glucose Watch?).

If Abbott is smart discussions with the UCSD researchers would have started or would be about to start. Given that Libre happen a bit by accident I doubt if management has the foresight.

If Abbott is smart..." ... what do you think? Abbott is smart about making money for it's shareholders and senior management (officer level and up). What they don't so is play well with others in the sandbox. ABT has a history of trying to do everything themselves, in-house, which guarantees two things, every time: our version of what ever it is will 1). cost more, and 2) not have a compelling competitive advantage over whomever came out first. Oh, and our product will launch after someone else has captured the #1, 2, and 3 market share positions.

It's wonder ABT does not build ABT company cars rather than buy them on the market.

Add to that the ADC factor: we know from history that no outside company has ever been interested in partnering with ADC. Could it be the brilliant management team? Hmmmmm...

Anyone with a great idea is going to partner with the market leaders. And that are going to look for a management team that is visionary, innovative, and successful. People who know how to get things done. Do you see that in our "leadership"? Duncan and his boyz are old farts still playing the pharma game from the 80's.

  18. Nobody cares about that anymore. We are ramping up for that Taco Bell merger.
