If your career is sales, marketing, quality assurance or R&D everyone knows this is not where you build a good resume or reputation. Next job may be difficult to get if they know worked at Valeant.

When a company that makes all its money from mergers runs out of new take-over targets that are large enough to hide its non existent organic growth (which happens when you fire everyone in R&D and take on enough debt to turn your bond rating to "junk")... you start to panic, no new products in the pipeline? Hire a bunch of new sales staff and maybe they will find a way to sell aging product to a market that is rapidly leaving Valeant behind. When it doesn't workout, which is very soon peeps, the top brass just blames the sales department and make it all their fault when the company tanks.

Tweaking figures is a fine art. I once worked at a highly reputable and ethical company that nevertheless was expert at smoothing out its year-to-year earnings. Most companies do that to some extent so it is not particularly evil so long as you are not truly cooking the books.

The problem with this company is that the balance sheet is bloated, and anybody with a modicum of financial training can find the soft spot from a mile away. In this case it is the fact that 78% of all assets are goodwill & intangibles which, if you are careful, never have to be written down through the income statement (back in the day most such asset had to be amortized over a maximum of 40 years). The amount this company is amortizing is a joke, especially for a portfolio that is so skewed toward older drugs. One of these days PriceWaterhouse is going to insist on a more realistic amortization schedule and then watch the net income, which is already negative, create a hole in the balance sheet the size of a moon crater. A really big crater. On a really big moon, like one of Jupiter's.
