If you had to bet on the chances of there being a widespread layoff in 2011, what you you bet the odds are and when in 2011 do you think it will happen? I think there is about a 60% cance and I think it will happen before the LOE for Lipitor.

it would make sense to do it before 2nd quarter. and they want to have everything as internally calm as possible before analysts re-grade pfizer after the lipitor loe. get it done quick and get it done early.

since they know they're not going to have that continued revenue stream from lipitor, why would anyone think they'd choose to wait any longer than necessary?

80% chance of this happening. large sales forces no longer needed with companies that promote "me-too" drugs that have generic equivalents.

if you made it through the last layoff, hold on to yer britches, 'cause it's comin' your way soon. you should NEVER, EVER think that it's not going to happen again. just as soon as you get comfortable (if that's possible in this industry) --- "ahhh, I made it through the last layoff! reason being is that I have 18 years with the company and they know they'd be in a heap of legal trouble if they let me go being so close to my retirement!" i love it when people become this smug... then they get axed and are angry as HELL b/c of the retirement/pension issue. THAT'S why you needn't ever be comfortable again in this industry. this happened to two colleagues of mine the last go around: one with 17 years, one with 15 years. sure, their package was nice but it's nothing like a full retirement/pension plan. i thought that experience would for sure induce a myocardial infarction in these two but luckily it didn't. anyway, whether you're young or old, don't get too smug. you're no better than anyone at pfizer - your poop smells just as bad as anyone else's. when it's your time, it's your time. you'll have zero luck suing pfizer (too costly).

I don't think we'll have a massive layoff since we haven't been filling the openings we've had over the past couple of years. If you figure 10% or so annual attrition, it's been 2 years since FFU, so we're already down around 20%. I doubt we'll have mass layoffs on top of that. PFE might flush the bottom 10-20%, but I don't see a mass whack job like in Jan. 2009 or 2005/2006. It's easier to glide down gently to a lower level of staffing.

Haven't you noticed that you're doing the work of 2 or 3 people from 5 years ago??? I'm not saying it's horrible or digusting, just stating a fact. We are doing the work of many who are no longer here. If further cuts come, it will be harder if not impossible to disguise the staff reductions.

    Happy New Year!

You all dreaming if you do not think there will be a massive lay-off in 2011. Look to the 50% cut in CGC. Please do some research into the new health care reform bill. Pharma companies will be paying higher rebates for products sold under medicaid and medicare, additionally they are not able to take a tax deduction for providing us health care benefits. These payments cut into the bottom line and reduce profits. How do you think they will compensate for these additional expenses when revenue is down due to the LOE on Lipitor and soon to follow Viagra and then Geodon? Why do you think they reduced the severance package from the previous package. The situation is not good for Pfizer or the industry. The government and public no longer sees the value of a vibrant productive pharma industry.

HERE IS A THOUGHT. Why don't you just look it up on the SEC documents that Pfizer just filed that disclose another 3-5,000 layoffs in 2011 instead of just dreaming about what if's. That may be easier, you think?

    I think:

    a) you're an idiot
    b) There is a 100% chance of layoffs
    c) they will be after Lipitor LOE in January just like the last massive layoffs.

No one ever said there wouldn't be layoffs....It's funny when people say the company told us we're "right sized". They never said that at all. If you listen you would know this.

You understand that those numbers aren't for just the sales force, but rather the entire company, right? You get that Pfizer is a big company, right?

If you think anyone other than Ian knows if there is layoffs coming for 100 % they are full of it. Safe to say they have too many reps for too little products with no new launches in the near future. Yes, they will engulf King and get a few products from that. Stop using words like right sized or spot on just makes you sound like your a wanna be corp exec. or something you are not. They are useless words put in books that people try to say " I will so you too how to be a millionare just like me." For free just pay shipping and handling and if not satisfied keep it as my gift to you. There is a sucker born every second. I just saw an add that said a bracelett will help to balance your chemical electrial charge. They only want $20 buck for it and guess what they will give you a second for free. If you think your job is safe for one second in this industry you just might be stupid enough to think this bracelett would work. I would bet they will be layoffs and some good people will loose their jobs. Good luck to us all going forward. I also think contract is the way the industry is going. It just makes good business sence. This of course is only what I think and should not be taken as fact. Happy New Year and good day.

Is your head in the sand ostrich?

They had us go to emergency meetings with the SDs, every damn fast start and iem, they spewed those exact words, "we are right sized". Then they would mumble, "this year" hoping nobody would catch it.

"This year" is over. I expect a slaughter coming "this year", 2011.

They will not wait until Jan 2012. I predict mid-year to fall of 2011. With this $4.00 card, maybe they have a hint of an at risk generic launch.

No shit sherlock. The article that disclosed this figure interviewed Pfizer exec.'s who stated the numbers would be targeted towards R&D and sales. You get that you don't have a clue about what is going to be happening, because you are clueless about staying informed. Did you get that? Did you get that?

    Again, here we go.
It has been reported and printed that another 3-5000 additional layoffs will occur due to the wyeth "takewhatyoucangetcuzwedon'tknowhowtoproduceproductsatpfizer" takeover. For those of you folks in loma linda that means on top of the 19,000 original layoffs.

All of the industry is moving to contract reps. In my area Novo Nordisk has been the only company to hire a rep to work directly for them. All of the big and even the small companies are placing contract reps into their vacancies. These are smart business decisions based upon the uncertainity that this industry is facing. We need Newt as President in 2012.

All depends on the trend of generic erosion into promoted branded business. We'll all know between Thanksgiving and Christmas Day 2011. Until then, enjoy the next 10 months, stop worrying and have fun selling and cashing those checks. That's my new year resolution.
