Use vs Utilize

    Don't trust the link, but since when was "utilize" considered a better word than "use"?
    When did "functionality" replace "function?

    Since most Americans are lazier than ever, the tendency is to shorten words, not lengthen them:
    A bid failure is now a big "fail".
    An installation is an "install".
    An explanation is an "explainer".
    A press conference is a "presser".

    So what's up?
    Do those who use "utilize" think they sound "more smarter" or "less dumber"?
