    LONDON (CNNMoney)
GlaxoSmithKline will no longer reward sales staff based on how many drugs they sell, marking a big shift in the way the pharmaceutical industry deals with doctors.
The British drugs giant said it was scrapping individual sales targets and related bonuses with the aim of giving greater priority to the interest of patients.

The changes, which will be introduced from next year, come as GSK (GSK) and other drugs firms face intense scrutiny in China over claims they bribed doctors to use their products.

Pull your head out of you ass - we don't get bonus now. We get a mystery check every quarter that has nothing to do with performance. We can't track any numbers accurately and we can't set quotas.

You bet every news release from pharma will contain the wording "for the benefit of the pt"

What wasn't said, This was labeled "For Internal Use Only" is this model will $$ave us a bunch of money and add to our profit...which of course will eventually be for the benefit of the pt..companies figuring out who pays (Insure, gov't) are the sales target you should be calling on..not an army of reps bugging poor doctors with limited Rx authority.

Another ingenious way to institute salary cuts / cost savings across the board.

Just what we need-another excuse to go home early! I agree the goals/numbers/bonuses are a joke but still-we are supposed to "sell" wink wink. I guess we really have become providers of "information". Miss the good old days when we really did sell, compare and win, drive the business. It's getting to the point where companies can UPS the samples, bombard the office with promotional ads/junk mail and hope they read it. So sad…this used to be a career. I guess we just take the money and run.

Companies are desperate to change model to UPS sample delivery, digital marketing, and patient driven DTC ads. The first step in that transition will be to take away samples from sales reps in 2014 so offices can get use to UPS.

The problem is that the 20% of docs will respond to information and samples on the spot.

The model should change, evolve and diversify. Bonuses are a liability. Governments view bonuses as enticements to cheat, promote off-label, lie and bribe because that is what they do all the time.

In an era of piss poor data, quarterly mystery checks and assclown managers still talking about driving business and maximizing sales despite all that, I support what GSK is doing as an experiment to see how it works out.

Of course, we know the only reason they are doing it is because they are corrupt at the executive level and this is an attempt to pin it on the reps making them look responsible for fixing things. It's a huge laughable joke. Pharma companies hate reps as much as bureaucrats do!
