Just curious if Merck changed the severance package for those laid off a few weeks ago? I know they didn't get the WARN period but hoping the severance package is still the same.

Yes the package for you is the same. However, the packages for the July layoffs will be substantially reduced. Be happy you are leaving now with anything.

So in the recent layoffs they got 2wks pay for every year with Merck? What are you hearing is going to be the severance in July? Any hand raising?

Actually Merck can change it anytime they want. They cannot play with the WARN part because it's mandated by the government. Now go back to wherever you came from. I always love it when fat ladies feel empowered. Now go eat some food. It's been almost 2 hours since your last meal.

Can a Merck employee get the severance package then go to work for Inventiv on a Merck contract?

No Warn Period with future layoffs!!!!! Merck has learned that if they layoff 100-125 at a time no need for Warn period. Must be over 300 at one time. Merck will now do mini-layoffs during the year to save money. This is the same reason the moved all Floating Holidays to end of year. You can not claim them.

Listen up fatty queen. You talk about packages so much because hubby ain't doing much for you in that department. When was the last time you had a day where you where doing something more than merely living. You must have one crappy life. I will make it better. If you don't post I will get you a years supply of food from Dixie Cafe. Best fried okra you will ever have. Think about it? Enough to fill that fat face for a year.

    That's a offer you can't refuse.

The severance is the same. Merck is run by an attorney. They don't want the aggravation of employee lawsuits. They know people won't sign away their legal rights to sue for a small seperation package.

The bigger carrot they hold over people's head is the pension and medical bridging. You can lose it if you don't sign away your rights to later sue.

Merck does not need to give any package. Lawyers will not take the cases even if you do feel you are getting screwed. It's not like a personal injury case. I have never seen a successful judgement because Merck violated employment law in regards to termination.

Be happy with what you get. Thank them as you leave.

Merck does not have to, but they do. If there were not compelling reasons for Merck to provide these benefits, they would not.

The labor laws that have any teeth are related to age discrimination.

Most of the people on this site are northerners. They don't have our value system. They will spend 500k on a house (not a home) and sacrifice everything for it (even their family). They have no clue what Dixie Cafe or okra is. It's tragic but that's how they are. Family is very low on the priority scale for them. "When was the last time you had a day where you where doing something more than merely living" is normal for them. They wear that like a badge of honor. The have no sense of community or family. They could care less about family legacy.

First of all to the above post: unfortunately real estate is very expensive on the East Coast and we have paved roads ! For everyone else: you should do well on a severance package if 60ish or so. The first thing one should do is pay off your mortgage as this will alleviate most of the financial stress for you and you can concentrate on kids college, cars, etc.

That's great. You don't care about your kids because of paved roads? Concentrate on the kids when they are conceived, not when they need a car. Maybe talk with them once in a while. At least pretend to care.

    Typical ignorant reply!

The truth is 500K is about a starting price ticket for tiny homes in most northern or west coast suburban areas. This is middle class. It has nothing to do with values - its our reality. I am a talking small, plain and simple home; not a toney style home where a CEO might live.

Anything suburban and close to a major city costs plenty especially once you exit the city limits. Lower middle class neighborhoods are not low cost either. Add on a big suburban property tax usually 15, 20, 30K a year and its massive weight you carry on your back.

This is normal in the northern and west coast big cities. There is no where to run unless you completely leave these parts of the country.
