YOU are wrong - same sex domestic partners are covered. Opposite sex domestic partners are NOT - you HAVE to be married. Just went through this with HR.

I'm sure a lot do - however, when you have a family status change while working for the company you have to produce a marriage license etc. And, if you're caught lying about your marital status its grounds for termination.
