With just about every other big pharma making the same huge bet do you really think it was his idea? Merck continues to bring in followers instead of leaders and we will remain a cost-cutting-to-make-earnings me too company because of it.

You speak the truth. Innovation left Merck years ago.

It will be enough when Merck is a 5000 employee company.

get the record straight, it is not Roger who resurrect it. PD -1 program restarted before Roger joined in. Peter Kim and Rich M restarted PD-1, even you might not like them, but it is the fact.

Yeah, they restarted it after two competitors had more advanced PD-1 programs and as usual, too late, MRK jumped on the bus. Trying to beat them by pouring ENORMOUS amounts of $ into expensive clinical trials to beat them in what will be a very fragmented market in the end. Net result: very little profit.

This post is very true. Feel bad for those employees still at Merck. Interview before they cut you.

Just like the disastrous Emerging Markets effort, RNAi, inlicensing, Ile23....the list goes on and on.

Merck is always 5 years behind, pour in an inordinate amount of money, bluster and arrogance, then lose spectacularly.

Never liked them, never will. Highly overpaid scientific hacks.

Bingo! Refer to post 41 for root cause. How sad is it that the plain as day problem is all over an anonymous message board but management still stumbles in the dark?

Roche and BMS have their act together. They will squash Merck with their disorganized plan. Merck knows nothing about oncology.

No it's because all five sucked and were fairly worthless from day one ....and the incompetent boobs certainly didn't help. But shit is shit.....

40B is nothing vs Pfizer/AZ. Ineptitude everywhere. WP Ex Dir a joke. Opportunity to be creative in discovery effort but again wrong leaders leading.

Nope, upper management doesn't care about this company.

All they are working on is their golden parachutes and milking the cow for all it is worth

Too bad this cow is past its prime, has mastitis, and is soon be headed to the slaughterhouse to make quarter pounders.

The management of this company only cares about itself and milking from the teet of mother.

If it had nurtured its employees instead of treating them worse than cattle sent to be slaughtered.

Actual managing of employees includes advocating and guiding employees, building on their strengths and trying to improve their weakness. It also includes advocating for them up the chain as well.

MRL and MMD did NOTHING to teach managers how to manage and actually train them proper supervisory skills. Instead they take a person with sub-level people skills and put them in a managment position because the have those three letters behind their name (pHD or MBA)

Graduate school does not teach people how to be good people managers which inspire their people.

All one needs to hear is the smug condescension of our financial wiz kid on these boards and the big laugh that his department seems to share to realize that no matter what you may think, this company is completely incapable of pulling itself in the same direction. Cannibalizing the company for personal gain is the modus operandi at nearly every level of this company from the executive suite down through middle management right to individual employees performing the work that keeps us going. This abysmal culture is woven into the very fabric of this company now as each new employee for the last fifteen years gets indoctrinated and then manages to lower the bar of professional behavior even further. Merck is imploding and no one needs antidotal evidence to realize it because it is so pervasive that everybody now simply experiences it in their day to day. A tragedy to watch this internal rot grow and no realistic means to change direction.

No change here. Everyone sees the issues but if you speak you might as well kiss your position goodbye. Same garbage making poor decisions like clean out and pushing junk compounds. Some day the empire will fall. Hope not too late.
