Word on the Street: Merck moving sales jobs to contract through InVentiv. Lay-Off in late June, Merck reps will have to interview with InVentiv for jobs with Merck. Makes sense if you think about it, less $ spent for contract sales force. This market has changed so much, these companies need to tighten up, start with their own reps who are making double what some contract reps make, take away the pension, change benefits, etc… and you've got yourself a nice savings.

Enter the 'you get what you pay for' and 'no reps, no managers, never gonna happen' comments. Well, here we are paying TOP dollar to a salesforce, management included, with declining revenues. Time to pay the piper - big time.

Truth is most contract reps are not primary breadwinners.

Most around are young new grads living with the folks, others are retired and needing more $$, and then there's the mommy group proving the daddy with some extra cash!

Amazing.....totally shocking.....if such drama and turmoil could roll out for all the s'ers .

Newsflash! This gig has been worth about what a Papa John's driver makes for the last 5 years because the skill to do each job is about the same. Merck does not give a $h!t what your living expenses/arrangements are. They are done paying TOP dollar for FAILING results.

With new products just approved and 4 more novel products to be approved potentially in the next 8 months it is not likely that there will be any big announcements! Maybe some rebadging and some rearrangement but diabetes is too important to let go and the upcoming products could be huge! The sleep drug alone could revolutionize the treatment of insomnia and it will not sell itself! We are already down to the bone in PC and if Lipshit was not screwed up by Willie and the boys we'd really be in a hurt right now! Don't get your panties in a wad, wait for the teleconference!

You are thinking like a sales rep. in old pharma. The model has changed. With reimbursements being cut and the likelihood of pricing pressure being dictated by ACOs and the ACA, there is less money to go around. And by the way- nobody seems to care about cutting edge treatments anymore. Everything is dictated by cost and right now we are the biggest cost on our company's P&L. The CEO, the board of directors and the shareholders know this.

…again. This isn't anything new. They've been laying off and pushing people out for many years running.
